GameFly is really lucky Netflix decided to not get into the game rental business. It remains one of the only standalone videogame rental companies on the web. It doesn’t seem like GameFly will be receiving any serious competition anytime soon, so it makes sense to take advantage of its new promotion.

GameFly is closing out the year with a big sale. It’s discounting a lot of its used titles by 50% at the most. You can take all that holiday money you’re getting and try to find something you like. On the other hand, this could be an opportunity to surprise someone with a late Christmas more »

Gamefly gives Thanksgiving discount on used game purchases

Rental service GameFly also sells games, and is getting into this week’s Black Friday shopping action. On its Facebook page, it announced its sale for the biggest shopping week of the year. GameFly will take $12 off the purchase of two or more used games. You can use it to keep games you are currently renting, or to purchase games directly from the site’s store. You do not have to be a GameFly member to purchase games from them. The discount will come up automatically when you add two or more used games to your cart.

Yesterday evening, Netflix announced it was splitting its streaming and DVD business into two parts. Gamefly up for a Webby award, needs your help

Gamefly, a site that allows you to rent video games through the mail, has been helping gamers for years by allowing them to try thousands of different games for an affordable monthly fee. Now they need your help in winning the 14th Annual Webby Awards (2011) for best gaming site.

Webby awards are awarded every year to websites of all kinds (hence the name). Winners get a nifty white spiral looking trophy with their name on it. The best part about the Webby awards is that people can vote for the winners.

Dish Network acquires Blockbuster Video, could challenge Netflix

Pushed out of relevance by quicker, cheaper movie rental options Netflix and Redbox, it wasn’t a surprise to see Blockbuster Video go up for auction. What did shock industry insiders was the company that ultimately purchased Blockbuster.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Dish Network purchased Blockbuster Video and its assets for $233 million in cash.

Embattled Blockbuster had a lot of debt and Dish Network will assume $87 million of Blockbuster’s obligations. Dish wouldn’t comment for the LA Times article. Industry rumors say that Dish Network is planning to use Blockbuster’s assets to compete with Netflix.

GameFly claims mailing fees consume all its income

The president and CEO of GameFly sent a letter to the Postal Regulatory Commission on March 24, 2011 asking it to come to a decision concerning GameFly’s postage rate. This ordeal has been going on for almost two years and is apparently wreaking havoc on GameFly’s monthly net income.

Waving goodbye to the video store

We are entering the end of an era. The age where going to the video store to rent movies or games is steadily coming to an end. You’ve heard the news of Blockbuster filing bankruptcy earlier this week. Last month marked the closing of all Movie Gallery properties including Hollywood Video and Game Crazy. Like it or not, video stores are dying. Before the bell tolls for the last ones standing, I will look back on what impact video stores had on my life.
