What Happened To: The Sega Nomad
Back in the days of the Sega Genesis, Sega had two handheld systems in circulation.
First, there was the Game Gear, which many of us older gamers know and might have loved back in the day. Aside from the host of games, many of which were great, the Game Gear was not without its flaws. It was bulky and ate up battery power quickly unless you had a battery pack. If you had a battery pack, the gaming lasted longer but it made it much bulkier.
Toward the end of the Genesis days, Sega also had the Nomad. In theory, it seemed like a good idea. After all, every gamer thought about the possibilities of bringing their consoles games with them and actually playing them on the go. It did answer the question of “why there wasn’t a portable version of a home console”. It also answered the question, “Why would you want a portable version of a home console?”
