Gamertell Review: The Horus Heresy: Mechanicum by Graham McNeill

Title: The Horus Heresy: MechanicumAuthor: Graham McNeillPublisher: The Black LibraryRelease Date: November 25, 2008Price: $7.99Rating: One thumb up and one thumb sideways, 80/100, B-, *** out of five.Pros: It’s an entirely new presentation to The Horus Heresy series and focuses on a group other than the Space Marines. The development of characters and events is beautiful.Cons: Presentation will be hard to read for some and different enough that it might turn off people who loved the following of the Space Marines through the first parts of Heresy series.Overall: This book is an acquired taste that some people will either love or hate.

Mechanicum is a bit of a puzzle in itself. It’s a good book that, much like most of the really good sci-fi or fantasy, is entirely an acquired taste. The book is the first in the series that puts a group, other than the Space Marines, into focus…

Gamertell’s non-game stuff for gamers gift guide for Christmas 2008

Duh statement of the century: gamers love to play games. However, most gamers also love to read about, watch, wear and hear about games or game-related stuff, so we put together a hot little list of non-game items that gamers will go gaga over this holiday. Besides – we can be a notoriously hard-to-shop-for bunch – so check out the following items for the elusive gamer on your holiday shopping list.

Left 4 Dead Movie Poster Pack – If you or your gamer can’t get enough of Valve’s magnificent zombie-blasting game, consider nabbing this 4-pack of posters based on the game’s 4 action-flick “scenarios”. Themed after cheesy action and B-horror movie posters, this is the perfect gift for a..

Clever shirts at Glennz Tees could be a perfect Christmas gift

Clothing is always an iffy holiday gift. Unless you really know someone well, its a delicate situation. I mean, you don’t want to put effort into picking something out, only to hear, “You’d have to pay me to wear this.” If you take a peek by Glennz Tees though, you may find a neat and clever last minute shirt for a gaming or Sci-Fi fan on your shopping list. Plus, since they’re T-shirts, if by some off chance the person you buy it for isn’t thrilled, they can just use it to sleep in or as a swimsuit cover-up. Plus, they’re reasonably priced – most shirts are $19.95.

There’s a wide selection of shirts, and quite a few video game ones. Sprite Stitch was quite taken with the Ground Defenses T-shirt, which depicts a soldier painting another Space Invader on the side of his tank to keep track of his record. Guitar Hero fans might want Living Room Legend, which depicts a Guitar Hero guitar controller smashed into a TV. (You can see it at the right.) People who enjoy the various Lego games may want the Evolution shirt, which shows a Lego man evolving from a single block to the Lego man we know today…

Gamertell Review: The Dark Knight on Blu-ray (with digital download and BD-Live)

Title: The Dark Knight (aka Batman: The Dark Knight, Batman Begins 2, The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience)Price: $35.99Format(s): *Blu-ray (DVD, Digital Download)Release Date: December 9, 2008Publisher: Warner Home VideoRating: “PG-13″Pros: Amazing quality video and audio of a great movie that doesn’t lose anything moving from big to TV screen. I’ve already given The Dark Knight a glowing review so I’ll skip the equally glowing rehash and concentrate on the extra features included in this worthy three-disc Blu-ray release including BD-Live.

Burger King’s Wii-themed kids meal toys, $5 off coupon codes

Along with novelty gift cards, the other inexpensive plastic tchockies I like to scout for are kids meal toys.

As a followup to last year’s Wendy’s Wii toys, Burger King is offering this year’s Wii-related tiny toys intended for tots (but not those under the age of three, of course). The ten toys are…

Get yer favorite gamer some nifty skivvies for Christmas

While dashing through my nearest Target store, I passed a rack stacked with tins in the underwear, er, pajamas section.

The tins, priced at $9.99 each, include a set of colorful men’s boxers that reflect the packaging: a Wii (as in the console), a red Guitar Hero guitar, black Guitar Hero speaker, an Xbox 360 controller, Super Mario Bros. 3 with Mario, the Superman logo and the Batman logo.

I did find a few listed on the Kohl’s and Sears web sites…
