Staples has a few tech deals for Presidents’ Day 2011
Today (February 21, 2011) is Presidents’ Day and that means many stores have savings on lots of neat stuff.
Staples is getting right in on the holiday deals by offering discounts on lots of electronics and accessories. While gamers don’t really think of Staples when they go shopping, it’s a great place to find a computer so you can play the latest computer games without worrying about updating your current system.
PacMap for Android turns your neighborhood into a videogame
It appears GPS just isn’t as exciting as it used to be. A standard robotic voice used to be enough, but now we need Darth Vader to tell us where Dairy Queen is. Navigation on a plain map was acceptable, but now we have Pac-Man eating pac-dots along our route. It’s a potentially dangerous idea, but it’s very cool.
What Happened To: The Gizmondo handheld game system
Released in 2005, the Gizmondo had promise.
The technical specs made it seem like it could’ve done pretty well. It was another handheld that seemed partially like a PDA or smart phone and partially like a handheld gaming system. It also had two separate units released. There was an ad-supported unit for $229 and an ad-free unit for $400. The ad-supported unit was part of the way that the Gizmondo company tried to put a bit more of the financial support for the handheld onto the consumer.
Unfortunately for Tiger Telematics, the handheld actually less than 25,000 units sold. It had 14 games that were on a “to-be-released” list from launch.
UPS driver, wife charged with with stealing game consoles, $250,000 worth of packages
The Ft. Myers News Press has a story about an UPS driver who police allege went on a crime spree that would make Grand Theft Auto IV’s Niko Bellic envious.
Craig Podleski, an UPS driver since January 2000, is accused of stealing $250,000 worth of packages including a Wii, an Xbox 360 and three PlayStation 3s. Non-gaming items Podleski is believed to have taken include a $700 compound bow, a Cobra GPS with Bluetooth and – we are not making this up – a police badge from Cape Coral, the town where he lives.
Gamertell Review: Far Cry 2 for Xbox 360
Title: Far Cry 2Price: $59.99 from most retail outletsSystem(s): *Xbox 360, PS3 and PCRelease Date: October, 21, 2008Publisher (Developer): UbisoftESRB Rating: “Mature” for blood, drug references, intense violence, sexual themes and strong languagePros: High replayability, great story, beautiful and realistic graphics, intuitive controls, buddy system is new and it works beautifully.Cons: Environment is too big, enemies are localized in certain areas and don’t leave unless they chase you, search for diamonds is not fun nor is it necessary. Glitches occasionally hinder playability.Overall Score: Two thumbs sideways, 70, C-, * * out of five.
Far Cry was one of the games that made way for large open-world shooters Crysis. Critics met it with skepticism but, in the end, accepted Far Cry as a great game. In some ways Far Cry 2 is very impressive. In every other ways, Far Cry 2 is painfully average at best…
Let GLaGPS tell you where to go
Portal fans may remember that GLaDOS dictated directions to the player at all times. GLaDOS was, of course, evil and misleading, but the haunting voice was somewhat mesmerizing. You can now have GLaDOS order you around in your daily life as well, thanks to the GLaGPS created by Ryan VanMiddlesworth. Where GLaDOS stands for Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, GLaGPS stands for Genetic Lifeform and Global Positioning System.
GLaGPS is a fan project, and not endorsed by Valve, the makers of Portal, but I’m sure they’d find it pretty darn cool. The voice pack only works with the Garmin Nuvi GPS so far, though VanMiddlesworth is also working on a TomTom version.
