Jack Thompson is back and just as crazy as ever
How could we forget Jack Thompson? Thompson is the man who made it his personal mission to protect the world from the horrors of videogames. He’s also a former attorney that was disbarred by the Florida Supreme Court in 2008 for lying and displaying an overall lack of integrity. In the wake of EA’s decision to rename the Taliban to Opposing Force in Medal of Honor, Thompson has emerged to claim victory.
Jack Thompson suing Facebook to remove users who hate him
Being disbarred by the state of Florida hasn’t stopped Jack Thompson from making enemies, headlines or legal trouble. His latest effort is a lawsuit against social networking mainstay Facebook, claiming the site should remove comments threatening Thompson.
Facebook has numerous groups for people galvanized by a single cause and many of them are anti-Thompson. Some include Stop Jack Thompson and Yes Jack Thompson, I Play Violent Video Games And Am Not a Psychopath.
Among the posts that angered Thompson are a user offering $50 to anyone who will punch Thompson in the face and another user suggesting people hit Thompson in the face…
Jack Thompson strikes again with a video game bill in Utah
I’m going to list Jack Thompson’s good qualities: Persistence and, uh, I think we’re done here.
The disbarred Florida attorney has crafted yet another anti-video game bill and this one is currently working its way through the Utah state political machine. Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff doubts its prospects, telling the Desert News the evidence Thompson has quoted about violent games having a direct link to violent crime hasn’t held up in court. The AG himself doesn’t sound like he knows what this bill purports to do or…
Jack Thompson tries to insert himself, video game violence into Portland shooter case
What, did you think being disbarred for life by the state of Florida would stop Jack Thompson from railing against video games? Sigh, I wish.
Thompson is asking, nay, demanding that detectives investigating the case of accused Portland nightclub shooter Erik Ayala seek the former attorney’s help.
Thompson e-mailed GamePolitics a copy of the note he sent to Portland Police Chief Rosie Sizer and, of course, Thompson is upset that detectives in the case will not pursue violent video games as an contributing factor in the case.
Thompson said the detective he spoke with had been…
BYU study indicates video games may worsen personal relationships
A study published Friday (January 23, 2009) in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence concludes that video games ruin relationships between gamers and their family and friends. The basis of the study is research conducted by Brigham Young University undergrad Alex Jensen and Laura Walker, a professor from the university’s School of Family, Home and Social Sciences. They gathered data from 813 college students to come up with their conclusions.
According to Jensen and Walker, the more students play video games the worse they…
Florida Attorney General flip-flops his attitude toward video games
Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum used to be similar to nearly every other politician, believing that video games would train young children to be mass murderers. He took particular issue with the Wii version of Manhunt 2 due to the fact that he thought the Wii’s motion controls would enable kids to act out their “violent tendencies.”
According to GamePolitics, the person who planted that seed in his head was, of course, a certain Jack Thompson.
However, now that the holiday season is upon us, McCollum is taking a stance that other politicians are beginning to take – cautioning parents to exercise restraint when it comes to…
Jack Thompson gets another job complaining about games
Like Castlevania ‘s Dracula, everyone’s favorite former Florida attorney has risen from the grave yet again. Even disbarment wasn’t enough to deter disgraced anti-videogame nutjob activist Jack Thompson from pressing on with his one-man crusade against violent video games.
According to a new GamePolitics.com story, Thompson is now manning a column on staunchly right-wing website Human Events.
In an interesting move, Thompson bragged about his new job…
Jack Thompson permanently disbarred
Dogs and cats are living together. Rainbows are everywhere. Jack Thompson has been permanently disbarred.
The Florida lawyer, who is best known to gamers as that dern lawyer who keeps hatin’ on our fun, was disbarred yesterday (September 25, 2008). The disbarment begins 30 days from yesterday so he can close out his practice, so expect some last-minute antics if not long-term appeals (which needs to be submitted by a lawyer in good standing with the Florida Bar – good luck). He’s also to pay $43,675 in Florida Bar fees.
Thompson sent Kotaku a copy of an emergency motion he filed with the court and a…
MSNBC writer denounces games as media’s main scapegoat
Back on Monday (February 18, 2008), MSNBC published an article by writer Winda Benedetti criticizing infamous Miami lawyer Jack Thompson’s far too well-known crusade against videogames. Benedetti even went so far as to suggest that certain games can actually be thought-provoking enough to warn against the dangers of such things like obesity, which gaming is also often blamed for.
Yes, you read that paragraph right. In the wake of the recent shootings at Northern Illinois University, someone in the media actually…
Judge to rule on Jack Thompson hearing in 2008
Since it was originally announced, there hasn’t been much to report about Jack Thompson’s upcoming trial with the Florida Bar. Sure GamePolitics did poll its readers about the case, but other than that, the web has been pretty silent. Unfortunately, the silence may last a little longer/ Yesterday (December 5, 2007), Judge Dava Tunis announced more »
