Kaz Hirai appointed to president and CEO of Sony
In early January, it was widely reported that Kaz Hirai will become the president of Sony in April 2012. At that time, current CEO Sir Howard Stringer was expected to maintain his role. Today, Sony announced Hirai is taking over the roles of president and CEO starting on April 1.
PlayStation Vita will miss the 2011 holiday rush
Our hopes of getting our mitts on a PlayStation Vita this holiday season have been dashed. A report from the Associated Press says neither Europe or North America will see the Vita this year. Instead, the Vita will be released in early 2012. Japan on the other hand will get the Vita before 2011 is over.
Anonymous PSN attack may have provided cover for data theft
Sony chairman Kazuo Hirai replied to a letter Congress sent which questioned many aspects of the PlayStation Network breach. Yesterday, we told you about a file that was left on one of Sony Online Entertainment’s servers. That file was named “Anonymous” and contained the words “We are Legion.” Despite Anonymous’ claims that it isn’t responsible for the attack, this file more or less implicates the organization in this crime. Hirai also explained the possibility of how Anonymous may have played a role in this whether they like it or not.

PlayStation Meeting 2011 reveals NGP, PlayStation Suite
Well, the Sony PlayStation Meeting 2011 has just finished in Japan and we know now all the latest juicy tidbits about the newest member of the PlayStation family, the PSP2. Which is apparently now called the NGP. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai took the stage to start off the event, which didn’t just focus on the new handheld. First, Hirai talked about the PlayStation Suite…
The PlayStation Network has yet to make any money
The PlayStation Network has come a very long way since its shaky debut in 2006 on the PS3. I remember when the PlayStation Store resembled that of a typical webpage in which a mouse pointer was used to navigate through all its content. This was before PlayStation Home, before PlayStation Plus and before trophies. In its four years of existence, it is hard to believe Sony hasn’t made a dime on the service yet.
Sony consoles will not be all digital anytime soon
Sony’s attempt at an all digital format with the PSPgo wasn’t as popular as the UMD based PSP consoles. Sony views the PSPgo as a learning experience as to how much consumers depend of physical media. While the PSPgo is not considered a failure within Sony, it has learned that discs are still the preferred type of media. Therefore Sony’s consoles will not be exclusively digital in the years to come.
PS3 motion controller delayed until Fall 2010
Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai explained the reason for this delay is so that the controller can take better advantage of more varied titles that will be released in the Fall. Hirai also said Sony is working closely with third party developers and publishers to create games that take advantage of the motion controller.
Tokyo Game Show 2009: Sony’s Kaz Hirai’s TGS Keynote speech all about the numbers
The 2009 Tokyo Game Show is in full swing now, which means announcements concerning new games are slowly starting to trickle out of Japan. This year Kaz Hirai, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. was keynote speaker at the event. On September 23, 2009, he presented “Sony Computer Entertainment 2009 Strategy” in front of a room of anxious journalists. Pretty appropriate since, as Hirai pointed out, it’s the 15th anniversary of the original PlayStation and Sony’s first foray into video games.
Hirai’s keynote wasn’t all that eventful. There weren’t many major announcements made, aside from a 2010 release window for the PS3 motion controller. Instead, it was more of a summary of the latest PS3 and PSP related numbers. Hirai did also briefly mention at the end of the speech that he felt 3D gaming was the next big step that Sony should take and footage was shown from a number of key releases (FFXIII, The Last Guardian, LBP PSP), but mainly it was all about the numbers.
Let’s take a brief peek at the numbers he mentioned…
Is Sony ripping off consumers with PSPgo?
Dubbed the “worst kept secret” of E3 by Kaz Hirai himself, the PSPgo was given a release date of October 1, 2009, with a $249 price tag. This is the same price that accompanied the release of the PSP-1000 in 2005. A lot has changed since then in terms of production costs for the handheld and some feel the PSPgo is overpriced. One such person who believes this is Wedbush Morgan Securities Analyst Michael Pachter.
