Have you ever wondered why Mario is chubby?
Iwata Asks always provides fascinating insight into the world of Nintendo. Iwata Asks confirmed to us that a 3DS Mario game is in development and that the 3DS would support 3D video recording. In the latest Iwata Asks column, we finally get to know why Mario is so chubby. It’s not because the guy gorges on mushrooms, or that he just loves spaghetti and meatballs. If Mario were created today, he might be designed as having abs of steel. Back in the NES days, Mario’s design was due to hardware limitations.
TeeFury’s latest shirt puts Mario in a burn ward
Good news! If you need a unique gift for a gamer friend or family member, TeeFury has stepped in to save the day! Today’s shirt is by the artist Rockhart and is called Lava Burn Ward. For $9, someone you love, maybe even you, could wear a shirt showing what happens to Mario when he happens to fall into a lava pit. Ouch.
Like all TeeFury t-shirts, the Lava Burn Ward shirt will only be on sale today, December 13, 2010…
Shigeru Miyamoto confirms Mario 3DS game
There are a few things in this life that are a certainty. A Call of Duty game will sell millions, a cat will always be selfish and Mario will always appear on a Nintendo platform. The weird thing is, a Mario-focused 3DS game hasn’t been announced. It’s unlike Nintendo to debut a new console without giving our favorite part-time plumber so much as a mention. You can be assured a Mario 3DS game is coming and Mario’s creator can confirm that.
Japan Import: Super Mario All-Stars Wii port out in October 2010
There’s no better way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. than with an extra special re-release. Unfortunately, it looks like this celebration may be limited to Japan. Nintendo just announced Super Mario All-Stars, for the Wii. It’d be part of a Super Mario Collection Special Pack which would include a Wii port of the game, a booklet that reviews the history of the Super Mario series and a soundtrack CD with music from every Mario game…
If video game characters aged realistically
Artist Katie Hampton has created some amusing images that feature classic video game characters aging in real-life situations. Most of her drawings focused on classic Nintendo characters.
A real Mario Kart coin-op kiddie ride (update 2)
Costing $0.50 (50 cents), this rockin’ ride was sitting pretty, looking hardly used (and from the hanging plug next to it, might not have even been plugged in). Strangely enough and seemingly for safety’s sake, there was a honkin’ huge lock on the coin lock. Thank you, Kroger. Thank you for keeping the Nintendo coin-op kiddie ride love alive.
E3 2010: Mario and Donkey Kong Mini Land for the DS
While at the Nintendo booth, I was able to play the new Mario and Donkey Kong Mini Land downloadable game for the DS.
You have to lead these little robot Mario’s through a obstacle course that involves making bridges appear and disappear depending on what you need to do. You also find little items like trampolines that allow you to jump and accomplish other tasks.
Mario’s many Guinness World Records
For a humble, mustachioed Italian plumber, Mario has achieved many record-breaking feats since we first met him throwing barrels at an angry gorilla. That is, according to the Guinness World Records 2010 Gamer’s Edition. Dubbing him “The Godfather of Gaming”, Guinness has put together a list of the big M’s (no, that doesn’t stand for Mickey!) records over the last 20 years.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 stars Mario, Yoshi and Luigi
As Super Mario Galaxy 2‘s May 23, 2010 release date draws nearer, Nintendo is revealing more secrets about its forthcoming Wii game. It’s not like there’d be any point keeping it a secret until the game launched. The latest revelation is quite a surprise, but a welcome one! It turns out Mario isn’t the only brother exploring the galaxy!
This time, it looks like Luigi is going to steal some of the spotlight for himself. Nintendo didn’t reveal any information on how players can play as Luigi instead of Mario, but did send a neat trailer and some cool screenshots onto the internet.
Let’s watch Super Mario Galaxy 2 Transmission 7 gameplay trailer and see Luigi in action…
The gaming cupcake game
This is one of the coolest uses of cupcakes and gaming that I’ve ever seen. Some folks over at Steel Head Studio have created 100 gaming-related cupcakes, some from the board gaming-realm, but most from the wonderful land of videogaming.
