09/09/09: Taking some time to remember the Dreamcast

On September 9. 1999, I remember sitting with my friends talking about whether or not we would be getting a Dreamcast. I boldly claimed, “No!” among a sea of yes-es and also claimed the system would never make it. No, I wasn’t a prophet embedded with the knowledge that the Dreamcast really wouldn’t make it more »

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 being released August 2009 for PlayStation Network

Gamertell recently told you that classic fighter Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is coming to Xbox Live. At that time, there was no official word on when it would hit PlayStation Network. Today (July 16, 2009) Capcom let us know the wait will be over for PlayStation 3 fighting fans August 13, 2009, for $15 (US).

This game’s 56-character roster is the biggest to ever trade punches in a Capcom game, which may be part of the reason for its success. Additions to this version of the arcade stalwart include ranked matches and optional visual filters to smooth out the game’s graphics. Also the “Quarter Match” type tries to recreate the old-school arcade feel by allowing four players to watch and chat while two players battle.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 hits Xbox Live July 29, 2009

Gonna take ya for a ri–i-ii-de!

Sorry. Ever since I heard the news that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was coming to current gen consoles, I cannot get the soundtrack for the game out of my head. Capcom has confirmed the acclaimed fighter will be available July 29, 2009, on Xbox Live Arcade for 1,200 Microsoft Points (US$15). The game is also coming to the PlayStation Network but and official date has not yet been announced.

One of the hardest parts of creating a fighting game is coming up with a cast of characters that will make players across the globe want to Hurricane Kick each other. In the ’90s Capcom mashed its already rabidly popular Street Fighter characters with the superheroes of the Marvel Comics universe in several fighting games. That partnership hit its peak with Marvel vs. Capcom 2, a game that is still selling for $100 or more in classic game auctions. It was light on story but high in fun factor, as Capcom proved that deep down gamers didn’t really care why Hulk was fighting Zangief, or why it was even a close fight. Gamers just wanted to have those crazy fights.
