Xbox Live Update for the week of April 10 through 16, 2011

The Xbox Live Arcade keeps us steeped in the old school and it doesn’t get much more old school than Yar’s Revenge. This one first appeared on the Atari 2600 and cast the player as Yar, an insect-like creature trying to destroy the evil Quotile. You had to blast holes in the shields protecting the enemy. The twist was that every hole you placed in the shield not only allowed you to shoot in but the Quotile to shoot out at you. Now Yar has been re-imagined as a woman inside a powerful suit of mech armor. She still has to blast members of the Quotile race, who brainwashed her and sent her to hunt down innocent people. Now there’s local co-op to help Yar bring justice to the world. Yar’s Revenge is 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

Xbox Live’s first holiday specials are live

Xbox Live’s holiday discounts are in full effect. There are well over 30 pieces of discounted Xbox Live content up for grabs. Keep in mind these deals will rotate all this week. There’s a really good chance the prices on these games, DLC and Avatar accessories will only be good for today.

Final round of Mega Man 10 downloadable content debuts

It’s been a good run, but it’s finally coming to an end, as Capcom’s releasing the last of the Mega Man 10 downloadable content this week. Stay strong though! This last batch includes features that, if you decide to purchase, will keep you entertained for at least a week. There are actually pieces of DLC available this week for the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game – two Special Stages and a new game mode.

The two special stages are, appropriately enough, called Special Stage 2 and Special Stage 3. If you buy Special Stage 2, you can send Mega Man off to face Punk. Punk is a Mega Man Killer Robot Master who appeared in Mega Man III and Mega Man V. If you defeat him, Mega Man gets the Screw Crusher weapon. Special Stage 3 allows Mega Man to journey and challenge the Mega Man Killer Robot Master Ballade. Like Punk, Ballade appeared in other games, specifically Mega Man IV and Mega Man V. Once he’s defeated, Mega Man gets the Ballade Cracker.

The new game mode, Endless Attack Mode, will probably offer the most replay value. As you can guess, it’s an endless challenge where you continually play through a never ending level to see just how long you can survive…

Xbox Live Update for the week of April 4 through 10, 2010

Last week one of the gaming’s most iconic characters returned in Capcom’s Mega Man 10. This week Capcom gives you some downloadable content love with the Bass and Special Stage 1 additions.

If you need a break from the frantic pace of Mega Man, Fable II is now available in Games on Demand. Racing fans get a treat too as the demo for Blur, a highly anticipated game, is now available.

Xbox Live Update for the week of March 28 through April 3, 2010

It’s a dose of classic 8-bit action this week as the Blue Bomber returns in Mega Man 10. The most popular game on Xbox Live is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and that game gets a huge update this week with the Stimulus Package add-on. Coming to Games on Demand this week is an eclectic mix including music, murder and mangling. The Deal of the Week is the Sega Dreamcast classic Virtual On:Oratario Tangram for 800 Microsoft Points, or 33 percent off its normal price tag.

Capcom’s Japanese promotions for Mega Man are sweet – pun intended

I’m officially jealous of Japanese gamers. They get access to all the good stuff! It’s not fair. The latest dig is that in Japan, Capcom’s going all out for the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 debut of Mega Man 10. There’s manjū, a soundtrack and even a contest to win a downloadable copy of Mega Man 3! Of course, the contest is only for Japanese PS3 owners, but still.

The highlight of the promotional blitz is the Mega Man 10 R10 Image Soundtrack CD. It has 21 Mega Man 10 instrumental songs and arrangements, along with two song that will actually have vocals! No word on who the vocalists appear on the album are, though. It isn’t out right away – Mega Man 10 fans will have to wait until April 30, 2010 to buy it. Since it isn’t a limited edition item, it’ll probably appear in online stores that carry video game soundtracks, like YesAsia and Play-Asia.

The other goodie might be a little harder to find outside of Japan. There are going to be Mega Man themed manjū released! Andriasang cleverly points out that they’re being dubbed Rockmanjū, as a play on the game’s Japanese name (Rockman 10) and the food itself (manjū). There are two varieties, which are really just two different kinds (shiroan and koshian) of manjū. My Japanese is far from perfect, but the shiroan should be a rice flour-ish bun willed with a sweet, white bean paste, and the koshian should, again, be a rice flour-ish bun, only filled with a sweet, azuki red bean paste…

Nintendo downloads for March 1, 2010

One game steals this show this week, and that’s Mega Man 10. Yes, the latest downloadable Mega Man game is here, and is appearing on WiiWare first! Make sure you have a spare 1,000 Nintendo Points ($10) lying around, because you aren’t going to want to miss this!

Oh, and there are some other games too, I guess. I mean, they all pale in comparison to Mega Man 10, when you really think about it. Two other WiiWare games, four DSiWare games and a Virtual Console title all were released too. But the only game that comes close to even approaching the majesty that is Mega Man 10 is Fatal Fury Special. Aside from that, there’s just cheapy sports games, a “Whack-a-Mole” rip-off and a virtual book. (Don’t get excited, the DSiWare book is the Goosebumps-style Flips: Terror in Cubicle Four.)

Gamertell’s Nintendo Download picks for the week are Mega Man 10 (WW) and Fatal Fury Special (VC).

CES 2010: Nine Capcom games on display at CES

Capcom’s at CES 2010, and the company is using the event to show off some of its forthcoming console and PC games. Ace Attorney Investigations (DS), Dark Void (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), Final Fight: Double Impact (PS3, Xbox 360), Lost Planet 2 (PS3, Xbox 360), Mega Man 10 (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360), Monster Hunter Tri (Wii), MotoGP 09/10 (PS3, Xbox 360), Super Street Fighter IV (PS3, Xbox 360) and Tatsunoko VS. Capcom (Wii) are all appearing at Capcom’s booth this year.

Most of what’s showing up at CES are new screenshots and game footage. For example, new screenshots from Lost Planet 2 episode 2 are being shown for the first time at CES. Also, there’ll be new trailers shown of both Super Street Fighter IV and Tatsunoko VS. Capcom, and the Super Street Fighter IV trailer will show some of the characters’ new combos and costumes…

Mega Man 10 will appear on the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii

Good news for Mega Man fans. Nintendo Power may have made Mega Man 10 sound like a WiiWare exclusive, but Famitsu has just revealed that it’s not. Mega Man 10 will be appearing as a download via WiiWare, the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Arcade.

Mega Man 10 sends Mega Man, or Proto Man, to save the world yet again. The Robotenza virus is infecting robots, causing them to go mad and behave in unpredictable and violent manners. Even poor Roll, Mega Man’s little sister, has been infected by the virus. Depending on which character you choose to play as, the story will be different.

Famitsu also revealed that Mega Man 10 will have difficult levels. There will be an easy mode for players (like me) who had trouble making it through Mega Man 9. Hurray…

Mega Man goes 8-bit again in Mega Man 10

That’s correct. Last year’s ultra-hardcore, super retro Mega Man 9 is getting a sequel. Fans of NES-style 2D sidescrolling action and robot bashing, take heed – the latest issue of Nintendo Power spills the beans on the new game, which is slated to appear on WiiWare.
