I hope you weren’t waiting for Mega Man Universe
Oh poor Mega Man Universe, we barely even knew you! You seemed so engaging and intriguing, but all that’s gone now. It’s over between us, because Capcom says so. The rather promising Mega Man game, packed with cameo character options from other Capcom classics, is no more. Don’t go searching the PlayStation Store or Xbox Live for it later this year. Mega Man Universe is canceled…
Capcom goes sales crazy
Comic-Con kicks off this week and Capcom will be there showing off is wares. For those of us who won’t be visiting San Diego this weekend, we can still partake in some discounted Capcom games. There are several titles that have been put on sale this week on the PlayStation Network and the App Store. Most of these prices are only available for a limited time.
Capcom announces Mega Man Universe, doesn’t say what it is
Capcom’s just made a Mega Man announcement! A very vague and pretty unhelpful announcement, but an announcement nonetheless. It turns out a brand new, downloadable Mega Man game, called Mega Man Universe, is being developed for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
And that’s it. That’s all that’s revealed. There’s also a Mega Man Universe trailer which was shown at GameSpot. It’s not very informative, but it looks good and is fun to watch. There’s a GameSpot interview with Keiji Inafune, Capcom’s Global Head of Production, as well, but like the trailer and official announcement offers no solid information and doesn’t even say what genre Mega Man Universe falls into.
Let’s watch the Mega Man Universe teaser trailer…
Doom 2 Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch mod demo now available
Apparently, fans have decided that the world is reading for a FPS Mega Man game. Well, one fan – Mike Hill. Everyone else just agreed with him and cheered him on. He has spent quite a bit of time working on a Doom 2 mod called Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch. Now, the first demo has been released and people can try it out for themselves.
Even though the version of Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch released is just a demo, there’s still a bit to do and see. You can fight in four different maps, there are items like E-tanks available, 10 different weapons from the Mega Man games can be found in levels and there are even five skins. You can practice playing alone even, before finding a server so you can head into the multiplayer mode.
Check out the Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch trailer, if you’re still unsure about the game…
Relive Zero’s adventures with the Mega Man Zero Collection in June, 2010
Mega Man fans desperate for some more 2D run-and-gun action will be pleased to know Capcom has exactly what they need. It turns out that the Mega Man Zero Collection, a DS compilation of all four Mega Man Zero Game Boy Advance games, will be out in North America on June 8, 2010. Japan gets the game two days later on June 10, 2010. Poor Europe still has a tentative Fall 2010 release window.
Capcom released four Mega Man Zero GBA games between 2002 and 2005 in Japan, North America and Europe, and all four were very well received by Mega Man fans. (Australia only got Mega Man Zero 4.) It’d probably be a bit challenging, and perhaps even costly, to find all four games now, so this $29.99 collection is quite convenient. Mega Man Zero Collection will also have some new game modes, like an Easy Mode for those who have trouble with the game’s standard difficulty.
Capcom also has released a trailer to show off the Mega Man Zero Collection. Let’s take a look…
Final round of Mega Man 10 downloadable content debuts
It’s been a good run, but it’s finally coming to an end, as Capcom’s releasing the last of the Mega Man 10 downloadable content this week. Stay strong though! This last batch includes features that, if you decide to purchase, will keep you entertained for at least a week. There are actually pieces of DLC available this week for the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game – two Special Stages and a new game mode.
The two special stages are, appropriately enough, called Special Stage 2 and Special Stage 3. If you buy Special Stage 2, you can send Mega Man off to face Punk. Punk is a Mega Man Killer Robot Master who appeared in Mega Man III and Mega Man V. If you defeat him, Mega Man gets the Screw Crusher weapon. Special Stage 3 allows Mega Man to journey and challenge the Mega Man Killer Robot Master Ballade. Like Punk, Ballade appeared in other games, specifically Mega Man IV and Mega Man V. Once he’s defeated, Mega Man gets the Ballade Cracker.
The new game mode, Endless Attack Mode, will probably offer the most replay value. As you can guess, it’s an endless challenge where you continually play through a never ending level to see just how long you can survive…
Xbox Live Update for the week of March 28 through April 3, 2010
It’s a dose of classic 8-bit action this week as the Blue Bomber returns in Mega Man 10. The most popular game on Xbox Live is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and that game gets a huge update this week with the Stimulus Package add-on. Coming to Games on Demand this week is an eclectic mix including music, murder and mangling. The Deal of the Week is the Sega Dreamcast classic Virtual On:Oratario Tangram for 800 Microsoft Points, or 33 percent off its normal price tag.
Capcom’s Japanese promotions for Mega Man are sweet – pun intended
I’m officially jealous of Japanese gamers. They get access to all the good stuff! It’s not fair. The latest dig is that in Japan, Capcom’s going all out for the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 debut of Mega Man 10. There’s manjū, a soundtrack and even a contest to win a downloadable copy of Mega Man 3! Of course, the contest is only for Japanese PS3 owners, but still.
The highlight of the promotional blitz is the Mega Man 10 R10 Image Soundtrack CD. It has 21 Mega Man 10 instrumental songs and arrangements, along with two song that will actually have vocals! No word on who the vocalists appear on the album are, though. It isn’t out right away – Mega Man 10 fans will have to wait until April 30, 2010 to buy it. Since it isn’t a limited edition item, it’ll probably appear in online stores that carry video game soundtracks, like YesAsia and Play-Asia.
The other goodie might be a little harder to find outside of Japan. There are going to be Mega Man themed manjū released! Andriasang cleverly points out that they’re being dubbed Rockmanjū, as a play on the game’s Japanese name (Rockman 10) and the food itself (manjū). There are two varieties, which are really just two different kinds (shiroan and koshian) of manjū. My Japanese is far from perfect, but the shiroan should be a rice flour-ish bun willed with a sweet, white bean paste, and the koshian should, again, be a rice flour-ish bun, only filled with a sweet, azuki red bean paste…
RIP Mark Beaumont, Capcom COO
Some sad news coming from Capcom yesterday – Mark Beaumont, COO (Chief Operating Officer) passed away after suffering a heart attack. He was only 51. The Capcom Unity blog commented on the death, and has provided a space for fans to leave a few words in his remembrance (or their condolences to his family).
Capcom’s Mega Man Zero Collection coming Summer 2010
Get ready for a blast of nostalgia, as Capcom’s announced it will be releasing the Mega Man Zero Collection outside of Japan. This new DS game was recently announced in Japan as a compilation of all four Mega Man Zero Game Boy Advance games, and now Capcom has confirmed it will be released stateside as well. We’ll get to play it, or for some people replay it, sometime in Summer, 2010.
As mentioned earlier, Mega Man Zero Collection contains four previously released Mega Man Zero games in one DS cartridge. So if you missed getting them the first time around, or have a DSi, you could be playing them for the first time. Mega Man Zero originally came out on the GBA in September, 2002. Mega Man Zero 2 was released a year later in October, 2003, and a year after that Mega Man Zero 3 was released September, 2004. The final Mega Man Zero game, Mega Man Zero 4, came out October, 2005.
The price for the Mega Man Zero Collection hasn’t been announced yet…
