Adobe abandons Flash for mobile browsers, prepare for more HTML5 games

Adobe made a major announcement today that affects the company right to its core. The company will stop developing Flash on future mobile devices (smartphones, tablets), and will instead focus its efforts on HTML5 development. Current devices that use Flash will still get updates for security purposes and bug fixes, but for anything else, the party is over. It’s ironic that Adobe once criticized Apple for not implementing Flash on its devices. Now, it’s basically admitting that Apple was right.

Max Payne coming to mobile devices in high definition

Not only did this morning bring news of a Max Payne 3 release window and a multiplayer announcement, Rockstar also revealed it’s bringing back the original Max Payne. No, we aren’t going to see this game a part of a new HD collection. Rockstar is shrinking down Max Payne for mobile devices.

More Xbox Live features coming in Windows Phone 7 update

Microsoft is stepping up its mobile offerings this fall when it releases the Mango update for the Windows Phone 7 operating system. Microsoft has said numerous times that Mango contains 500 new features. It all looks very promising, but WP7 has been lacking when it comes to Xbox Live functionality. With Mango, Microsoft is going to alleviate that issue.

Insomniac Games creates new studio for mobile and social games

Insomniac Games is known for blockbuster franchises such as Rachet and Clank and Resistance. The studio is now trying its hand at the social and mobile games space. THQ Wireless has been sold

In a move that further exemplifies THQ’s new direction, the company has sold its wireless division to a company called 24MAS. THQ mentioned in its last financial report that it is going to concentrate more on core titles, while backing away from smaller aspects of the business. In this case, THQ Wireless dealt with games that could not take advantage of the current boom in smartphone gaming.

Square Enix continues porting its mobile games to handhelds

Square Enix has once again shown that it is ready and willing to port its mobile games to handhelds and consoles. The latest example is Kuni Yaburete Sanga Ari, also known as Hills and Rivers Remain. Previously, it was only available on cell phones, the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Now, Square Enix has announced that the game will be released on the Japanese DSiWare store this week on October 28, 2009.

Kuni Yaburete Sanga Ari / Hills and Rivers Remain is a real time strategy game where players guide Alan and his associates as they seek to protect and acquire as many towns as possible. The problem is, the towns are constantly in danger of being assaulted and taken by enemy forces. So, players have to protect the towns they have while also trying to gain new ones and push back an invading menace.

The 800 Nintendo Point game is going to be similar to the iPhone/iPod Touch and mobile releases, in that the story is the same and there will still be story and free play modes. It is unknown if there will be additional maps released like there was for the cell phone release. DSi-exclusive additions include a stylus control scheme, four player multiplayer and multiplayer maps.

Siliconera pointed out on September 14, 2009 that Square Enix trademarked the English name (Hills and Rivers Remain) on September 8, 2009 for video game software…
