CES 2011: Jam Party Remixed preview
Just when you think you’ve seen everything there is in music-themed video games, another one comes along. This time however, instead of the usual match-the-colors gameplay you’re accustomed to, this time you get to create your own music with Zivix’s Jam Party Remixed.
Music game sales have fallen off a cliff
The music rhythm genre isn’t what it used to be. We started with one guitar and a few dozen cover songs, to a real guitar with thousands of officially licensed tracks. When you look at it from that angle, the genre has made a huge leap forward. This is true, but it came at the expense of its own profitability.
E3 2010: Konami kicks rhymes with Def Jam Rapstar
Perhaps the most consistent complaint about music games in 2009 was that there was nothing new and innovative happening with them. Konami is hoping to change that perception with karaoke rap effort Def Jam Rapstar. It features more than 40 songs from some of the genre’s biggest names, including Outkast and Ice Cube.
Groovin’ Blocks now available on the Playstation Network
Puzzle fans everywhere will be happy to know that Groovin’ Blocks is now available on Playstation network for $9.99 via the Playstation Store. Groovin’ Blocks is a gem matching puzzle game that is set to tons of great musical beats.
The game has more than 50 levels and 20 original songs that play with each level. You need to match three or more gems to make them disappear and score points. For more points, users can match the gems to the beat of the music and those who keep the ‘groove’ going until the end of a song without letting the gems touch the top will advance to the next level.

Lloyd-Webber prepping Phantom of the Opera game, seriously
Here’s one I did not see coming. The Los Angeles Times has reported that Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Really Useful Group is working on a Broadway musical game. The company that handles Lloyd-Webber’s interests is talking to several game publishers including EA, who publishes the mega-hit Rock Band series of music-themed games. Reportedly Really Useful Group wants to develop the games across multiple consoles and PCs.
Rolling Stone’s 50 best rock and roll videogames of all time
Rolling Stone has just put out a mammoth list of the 50 “best” rock and roll games ever made – and I have to say, so many doozies made it on the list, it’s more appropriate to call it “Music games – the good, the bad and the WTF”. True gems of the genre, like Frequency, Rez, Space Channel 5, PaRappa and the recent Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles are on there, sure enough. But it also has tripe like Britney’s Dance Beat and Spice World. The WTF section is pretty full, too, with games like Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker and Kiss: Psycho Circus. Really.
Musical video games outselling digital music
3News has a little blurb up on the extreme popularity of music games ( like Guitar Hero, Rock Band and their knock-offs) – and their impact on the music industry and musicians. Basically, it’s a mainstream publication taking a look at how one genre of videogames has erupted and is now changing the business model more »
