As expected, Netflix abandons videogame rentals

Netflix Vita

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has confirmed the company will not be pursuing videogame rentals. This announcement was made during an investor call today. The origin of Netflix’s videogame plans dates back to September 2011 when Netflix revealed Qwikster would handle its disc-based business. Qwikster was eliminated a short while later, but the fate of videogame rentals more »

Netflix and video games: What happened?

The Q&A session between Netflix and its investors recently wrapped up today. During the event, in which we attended virtually through the power of the internet, Netflix didn’t say a word about a video game rental service. Just last month, game rentals were one of the high points Netflix offered when it was promoting Qwikster. Ever since the Qwikster plans were cancelled, Netflix has remained mostly mum on game rentals, only stopping the silence to state it isn’t sure if games will be offered. After reading and hearing Netflix’s third quarter financial results and its letter to investors, I think I have a good idea why games may be off the table for the foreseeable future.

Netflix still undecided on game rentals

The prospect of Netflix adding video game rentals to its mailing service continues to grow dim. Back in September, Netflix announced it was spinning off its DVD business as Qwikster. Qwikster was to operate separately from Netflix and include game rentals similar to GameFly. However, earlier this month Netflix decided to kill Qwikster, and games may die with it. In a letter to investors ahead of its third quarter 2011 earnings call, Netflix is still on the fence about games.

Netflix game rentals may be in jeopardy

There is a slight sense of joy on the internet this morning following Netflix’s announcement to kill Qwikster. Qwikster was going to be the company that would handle the DVD side of the Netflix empire. Netflix canceled that plan due to customer complaints and shareholder angst. While many may be happy to learn of Qwikster’s demise, Netflix may dismiss everything associated with Qwikster including game rentals.

Qwikster gives GameFly reason to worry

Yesterday evening, Netflix announced it was splitting its streaming and DVD business into two parts. Qwikster is the name of the new Netflix-owned company that will handle the DVD side of the business. Qwikster will also add games to its library of content that’s available to rent. This could result in some big problems for GameFly.

Console owners make up half of Netflix viewership

During Sony’s E3 2011 press conference, SCEA president Jack Tretton said the PS3 accounted for 30% of Netflix streaming. A new report from Nielson begs to differ. According to the report, the PS3 is not the dominant Netflix streaming console. However, the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii combined bring in half of Netflix’s streaming audience.

Nintendo Downloads for July 14, 2011

It’s Thursday, which means everyone with a 3DS, DSi or Wii is wondering what new games there are to download today. The answer is eight. Seven games were released, as well as a 3DS Netflix app.

Of course, the Netflix app is probably what most people will be interested in. With good reason. It shows that while the 3DS eShop is still laughably horrible when it comes to user-friendly browsing and content, there’s still a glimmer of hope that it will be more successful than the Wii Shop Channel and DSi Shop. Maybe by Christmas the eShop actually start getting some original, 3DS exclusive games…

Today’s 3DS eShop update includes Netflix

It’s okay that Japan and Europe ended up getting the Nintendo Video app in the 3DS eShop today. Totally fine. If you live in either country, go ahead and enjoy your free videos. Those of us in North America aren’t jealous anymore, because it turns out we’re getting Netflix tomorrow.

Yes, news about Nintendo’s 3DS eShop update for July 14, 2011 has leaked out and biggest news is a free Netflix app. You just head to the eShop, download it and you’re all set…

Kinect update for Netflix drops today

First you were the controller, now you are the remote. Kinect support for Netflix on Xbox 360 is available today for your updating pleasure. Now instead of pushing buttons on the Xbox 360 controller like a high tech caveman, you can use your hand and voice to select and play content.
