Blizzard begins Starcraft II closed beta

That’s right, Starcraft fans. Starcraft II has finally entered closed beta. That means, of course, that you have to receive invitations from the company to play but, heck, at least it’s happening.

Beta testers are also getting a look at the new and improved Battle.net which will eventually collect World of Warcraft, Starcraft II and any future products into one streamlined service. Now it’s time to sit and pray for an invite. Though maybe we could all just compile a list of the things we’d do for a key and then pray that Blizzard sees it. Either way, there’s lots of prayer involved with receiving one.

Opinion: Warning labels!? Don’t even pretend video games are as bad as cigarettes

If you thought listening to the disclaimers at the end of a commercial for medicine or reading the warning labels on the side of a cigarette pack is funny, then get a load of this.

I read the report posted on CNet by Don Reisinger which indicates that on January 7, 2009, Joe Baca, a democratic representative of California, introduced the H.R.231: The Video Game Health Labeling Act of 2009 bill to 111th Congress requesting to make it mandatory that video games that have received a rating for violence to display the following warning:

WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior.

I thought it was funny. At first…

Gaia Online, other gaming companies make cuts to prepare for 2009

I was browsing the net as usual to keep myself abreast of all the game industry news when my friend and fellow Gaian told me about a journal he found on Gaia Online announcing that Gaia was laying off members of its staff. I couldn’t find that journal but at any rate that’s simply horrible with the holidays just around the corner. But to make sure I’m reporting the truth and nothing but the truth I contacted Kate Hourihan of Mullen PR to clarify what is going on.

“Hi Lucy,

Out of respect for those impacted by the staff reductions, we’re unable to comment on specific employees. With the current economic conditions we found itnecessary to turn to staff reductions and other operating cost cuts as we head into an uncertain 2009. Above all, our priority is to continue to…

Elvis Presley, Justin Timberlake now in Gaia Online Celebrity Snare

When Kate Hourihan of TriplePoint PR sent me a message asking if I wanted rock the mic like Justin Timberlake or Elvis Presley I had to check out what’s new at Gaia Online’s Celebrity Snare.

The Celebrity Snare, which opened September 2008, allows Gaians to purchase virtual items from famous celebrities. In September 2008 Gaia online’s Celebrity Snare became the site’s new market for virtual resources and featured items associated with the Incredible Hulk and Snoop Dogg.

This year’s Celebrity Snare items include…

According to a recent article published in the SouthTown Star and written by GateHouse News Service, online gamers may have been wrongly stereotyped.

Of the 7,000 online gamers researchers interviewed who played EverQuest 2, a MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online game), they are not the overweight rotund teenage boys most people once thought they were…

Rumor: Dark Knight game not dead, just hibernating

You may have read in an earlier story here on the tell that the Dark Knight video game was axed . Alas, there is faint hope for the caped crusader fans that a game exist and indeed is in the works.

Our lovely friends over at Kotaku have scored an interview with a source who has played the game and given details and problems that the new developers, Pandemic, are running into.

First, a few…

Stephen King opposes anti-game bill

If you’ve been keeping up with video games in politics, you may or may not already know about HB1423, a bill being proposed in Massachusetts that would block the sale of violent games to minors. While there has been much debate amongst politicians since its introduction, best-selling author Stephen King cast his own personal vote on the matter in his latest Entertainment Weekly column.

King, who prefaced the article by stating that he was not a fan of video games at all, went on to blast the Massachusetts legislature, noting the hypocrisy of the…
