NPD and EEDAR form partnership to track physical and digital game sales
Every month, The NPD Group releases sales figures of video games that were sold at retail. Their data lets us know how many units a game or console sold. The problem with The NPD’s numbers is that they don’t cover games that are sold digitally. The digital market is huge and not counting it creates an inaccurate representation of videogame sales. Thanks to a new partnership between The NPD Group and analyst firm EEDAR, digital sales will no longer be left out.
The highest grossing videogame ever is Guitar Hero III
A slight taste of irony has washed over the videogame industry. The NPD Group put together a list of the highest selling videogames of all time according to revenue earned. This top ten list contains three publishers – Nintendo, Activision and MTV Games. The top earner on this list is none other than Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. The game brought in $830.9 million. At this time, GH III has brought in more revenue than Call of Duty: Black Ops.

NPD Group will no longer report sales numbers of videogames
Once a month the NPD Group provides the press with retail sales figures for videogame software and hardware. It was the main way a lot of people learned how well a certain game had done in the month. We also had fun bringing you those numbers and elaborating on what they mean. Yesterday (October 12, 2010) NPD Group announced it won’t be providing sales numbers anymore.
July 2010 NPDs: Xbox 360 rules the month
The July NPD sales figures have just been released. It’s not the greatest month the videogame industry has ever seen. As we recall, the summer months have been under a dry spell. Naturally, console sales have not been pushed by a huge release on just about every platform. StarCraft II is the exception, but its sales are not present in this months NPD’s. According to NPD analyst Anita Frazier, StarCraft II boosted PC game sales by 103% over July 2009.
April 2010 NPD sales down 26% from last year
It has been a very disappointing month for videogame sales overall. Analysts are reporting game sales have fallen 26% compared to this time last year. The decline is attributed to the timing of Easter in 2010 and a decrease in handheld console sales. When compared to handheld sales in April 2009, handheld sales make up 61% of the overall revenue decline last month.
NPD’s Top 20 US video games sales report for May 2009
Independent research company NPD Group has released its US video game sales numbers for May 2009.
The best selling game for the month was THQ’s new release, UFC Undisputed 2009 for Xbox 360 (the PS3 release came in fourth).
Six Wii games made the chart followed closely by the Xbox 360 and DS with five games each. Only three PS3 games made the list, although two were in the top five, and not a single PSP, PS2 or PC/Mac game made the Top 20.
The oldest game on the chart for the month is Mario Kart DS release in November 2005 coming in at number 12, down from eighth place in April 2009. Eight games released in May 2009 made the list.
NPD Update: Nintendo systems a big hit in March 2009
Nintendo is booming in sales lately, especially last March (2009). According to independent research group NPD, the Wii and DS lead US sales in March with the Wii selling US$601,000 and the DS more than half a million, even before the launch of DSi on April 5, 2009.
Last month the Wii sold about 120,000 systems per week, whereas The PlayStation 3 sold only 43,600 systems and the Xbox 360 sold only 66,000. Even though this is a decrease in sales from what Nintendo (and all other companies) are use to selling, it still shows how well Nintendo is doing compared to the other Companies.

Game industry rakes in more than $20 billion in 2008
It’s hard to tell from all the closures, layoffs and other bad financial info we talk about all day but according to research firm NPD Group, the video game industry pulled down huge profits in 2008.
According to NPD’s stats, computer, video game and peripheral sales added up to $21 billion in 2008 with entertainment software comprising up to $11.7 billion of that. That’s a jump of more than 23 percent from 2007, although it probably does little to console the numerous people in the industry that lost jobs recently.
Also interesting to note is that more than half of those software sales are considered…

The console iteration of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed placed in 3 of the top 10 spots in this month, totaling 1.16 million in individual sales. The Xbox 360 version of the game accounted for 52 percent of those sales, with the Playstation 3 version taking 28 percent. Other notable games that appeared on the software side of the NPD charts included Wii Fit, Nintendo’s “exercise simulator,” the latest iteration of Mario Kart, the ever-present Wii Play and…
