Court orders release of seized PS3 consoles
The latest round in the battle between LG and Sony has resulted in a win for team Sony. In late February, LG was granted a preliminary injunction by the court. Thousands of PS3s that were shipped into Europe were seized by customs due to a patent dispute between the two companies. Today (March 10, 2011), Sony successfully petitioned the court to lift the injunction, resulting in the release of 300,000 PS3s.
Gaikai remains unmoved by OnLive’s cloud gaming patent
A few days ago, OnLive announced it had received a fundamental patent for cloud gaming. This patent was filed back in 2002, but was just granted recently. This patent sent minor shockwaves throughout the cloud gaming community as it may hinder other companies from using similar technology to stream games from remote servers. OnLive’s most vocal counterpart, Gaikai, comes to mind as a company that wouldn’t be pleased with OnLive’s patent. Gaikai’s chief executive David Perry thinks cloud gaming isn’t something that can be patented.
OnLive has a fundamental patent for cloud gaming
OnLive is solidifying its position as the go-to service for cloud gaming. OnLive has just been given a fundamental cloud gaming patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office. This patent is the culmination of almost a decade of work that was needed to bring OnLive to the masses. This patent could prove to be a challenge for other companies that may consider creating its own cloud gaming service that uses methods similar to OnLive.
Apple embraces 3D technology
3D technology is like a freight train that won’t slow down. The public hasn’t taken to 3D to a large extent, but that doesn’t stop manufacturers from making its products 3D compatible. Nintendo is doing it, Sony has done it and Apple has just been granted a patent for a new 3D display.

In a nutshell, if developed, the tech could automatically censor naughty words. As every Xbox Live player knows of the horror, er, stupidity that is caused by the famous…

The PSP Slim has been out for a while now so it may be surprising to learn that Sony is working on a new version. Patents were found lingering on the FCC website show multiple very technical documents about the new PSP-3001 series. Before jumping up with glee you should know that the patents don’t show anything new…
Gibson drags companies behind Rock Band to court
After Gibson Guitars sued Guitar Hero’s publisher Activision and some major game retailers, alleging that the game infringes upon one of its patents (related to technology required for simulating a musical performance). It has realized that the other leading game in the music genre, Rock Band, is also in violation of its patent. Now Gibson Guitars is suing Rock Band’s developer Harmonix, its parent company MTV Networks and the game’s distributor, Electronic Arts…
Gibson sues Activision, Activision sues back
After a long collaboration between the two companies on the very successful Guitar Hero franchise, in January 2008 Gibson Guitar Corp. filed a law suit against Activision Inc. for patent infringement claiming it has a patent for a system that simulates a concert experience and playing a virtual instrument. The suit asks for Activison to either stop manufacturing all components of the Guitar Hero video game or to pay a license fee for the system.
Earlier this week, Activision filed a lawsuit to complain to the Superior Court in California, claiming Gibson’s patent is invalid and the guitar maker has…
