Pirates of the Burning Sea: Power & Prestige features and beta test unveiled

Aaargh, avast ye scurvy scoundrels! Sorry, couldn’t resist. Seriously, though, Flying Lab Software has announced some details for Power & Prestige, the first major expansion to its critically acclaimed MMORPG title Pirates of the Burning Sea. Power and Prestige is slated for Summer 2010 release.

Players can apply for the expansion’s beta opening Spring 2010 by visiting the Burning Sea site. Players on trial accounts can also apply to take part in the beta test, and the site offers sign up for a 14-day trial. Once the beta server opens, you’ll need an active subscription.

Military personnel play Pirates of the Burning Sea for free

It’s always great to see video game companies giving back to deserving individuals. A great, recent example is Flying Lab Software and Sony, which have decided to give men and women serving in the US military Pirates of the Burning Sea for free. The servicemen and women will also be able to play the MMO for six months, free. Typically, the MMO costs $19.99 and an additional $14.99 a month to play. Normally, that’d cost $109.93. If there are servicepeople who have already purchased Pirates of the Burning Sea, they can still take advantage of the deal and get six free months of playtime.

There are some restrictions to this deal. First, the military personnel must be on active duty. The promotion doesn’t apply to veterans or those on reserve duty. Second, those interested in taking advantage of the deal must do so before November 30, 2009. That’s when the promotion ends.

It’s very simple to sign up. First, you visit the Pirates of the Burning Sea free military trial page…

Flying Labs shows off Pirates of the Burning Sea at PAX 08

Flying Labs, the developers of the MMO pirate game Pirates of the Burning Sea, had essentially the same demo of PotBS that they had at last year’s PAX (2007). If you haven’t played this game yet, then you really should.

Like any MMO game, you can custom build a character but the combat is a little trickier than most MMOs as you must use the number keys to attack with your sword.

The big selling point of PotBS is the ship-to-ship fighting with cannons…
