Nintendo president talks video apps and social gaming
Nintendo is likely to be the first publisher out the gate with its next generation of gaming hardware. The Wii U debuted at E3 this year, and will have a similar appearance at CES next month. Considering the challenges the Wii U faces thanks to the innovations made by the Xbox 360 and PS3, we’re all wondering what Nintendo’s strategy is going to be. We want to know if Nintendo can capture lightning in a bottle with the Wii U just as it had done with the Wii. Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime, answered some questions for AllThingsD about the position Nintendo will put itself in moving forward.
E3 2011: Wii U gameplay footage was composed of PS3 and Xbox 360 games
Earlier today, Nintendo revealed the Wii U during its E3 2011 press conference. I mentioned how the video montage of third-party games made the Wii U look as if it could present graphics that are just as good as the Xbox 360 and PS3. There was a really good reason for that statement. It turns out Nintendo didn’t show any actual gameplay footage from Wii U games in development. Everything that we saw was actually taken from the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of those featured games.
Reggie Fils-Aime talks about garage developers, 3DS and Wii successor
With the North American and European launches for the 3DS rapidly approaching, eyes are on Nintendo to repeat the success it had with the DS. Nintendo has set itself up to somewhat future-proof by equipping the 3DS with not only a 3D screen, but 3D cameras as well. Nintendo has cleared the glasses-free 3D hurdle well before any would-be competitor. The stage is now set for Nintendo to dominate the handheld market once again. The question is how Nintendo will deal with mounting competition from mobile devices such as smartphones.
Nintendo solidifies 2011 release date for 3DS
Yesterday (June 25, 2010) on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon the president of NIntendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime let Fallon try out Kid Icarus Rising on the 3DS. When Fallon asked when the 3DS will be in stores, Fil-Aime replied it would be out in 2011. See, mystery solved.
3DS not just an updated DS or DSi
Ever since the 3DS was announced, people have been wondering if it was going to be just like the DS lite and DSi – a slightly modified and updated version of the DS. So much for that, as it turns out the 3DS is a brand new system. Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president, talked with BusinessWeek and said so.
That’s the only new information gleaned from Fils-Aime though. There’s still no pictures of the 3DS to oogle or anything on it’s specifications and capabilities. All we know is that it will have 3-D without 3-D glasses…
Who’s On Crack in video games for April 9, 2010
People do crazy schtuff. Companies, which are run by people, do crazy stuff on a much larger scale. And when you mix fantasy worlds, die-hard fandom and entertainment industry PR, even crazier stuff happens. This week we have Microsoft, Konami, everyone who already owns an iPad (except you, Kirk), that jerk who smashed his iPad for fleeting internet fame, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, hentai haters and me…
Nintendo’s next generation console depends on Miyamoto’s ideas
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime spoke with Kotaku at GDC 2010 where he noted the state of Nintendo’s consoles. It has been rumored that a Wii HD console will come sooner rather than later, but Fils-Aime feels Nintendo’s next console will not depend on time, but rather innovation.
New Super Mario Bros. outsells Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3
Modern Warfare 2 has been a total success for Infinity Ward and Activision. With sales in the hundreds of millions it has become one of the biggest entertainment properties ever, putting it in the same league as blockbusters like Avatar. It is an awesome action title and without a doubt one of the best shooters around, but apparently it is not the only one enjoying overwhelming success.
In an interview with GT TV, back in November, 2009, when New Super Mario Bros. came out, Reggie Fils-Aime – president of Nintendo of America – predicted that it would outsell Modern Warfare 2, when comparing sales on a single system, be it Xbox or PS3. While at that time the statement would have sounded somewhat bold, it actually became true…
E3 2009: Nintendo offers (little) info about its Media Briefing
Nintendo sent out a press release today (May 28, 2009) with scant details concerning its upcoming E3 2009 press conference taking place at 9 a.m. (PT), June 2, 2009, at Club NOKIA in Los Angeles, CA (which we will be Live Blogging).
The most significant part is that three speakers were revealed…
Expecting a Wii for the Holidays? Expect another shortage
Two holiday seasons after its initial launch and the Nintendo Wii is still a commodity that is hard to come by. According to Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime, Even though the system are packed into more homes now than two years ago, Wiis will still be hard to find during the Holidays.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Fils-Aime said that Nintendo’s production of the motion-controlled console was up 33% over last year (from 1.6 million units to 2.4 million):
One of our competitors projects they will sell 10 million consoles worldwide this year. For us, that’s three months of production. We’re producing an unprecedented level of hardware to try to meet demand.
At this point, getting a Wii shouldn’t be…
