Gamertell Review: Rocket Knight for Xbox Live

The Xbox Live Arcade is to retro video game stars what VH1 is to aging rock stars: One last chance to rock the masses and show these kids they’re still cool.

Konami digs deep into its character archives for this one, as Sparkster the Rocket Knight hasn’t been seen since the early ’90s. Hard to say why he never made it big. Maybe he got lost in the “me too” mascot craze as a wave of Sonic the Hedgehog impersonators assaulted video game store shelves back in the day.

Xbox Live Update for the week of May 9 through 15, 2010

Aerial combat addicts, this week the Xbox Live Marketplace is for you. Gamertell previously told you about the return of Konami’s classic 2D mascot Sparkster, and now the Rocket Knight is here in all his glory. Rocket Knight will run you 1,200 Microsoft Points, which does put it in the pricier end of Xbox Live Arcade titles. Come on, though, the game’s hero is a possum wearing a jetpack! Where else but in video games can you have such an experience?

Konami’s Sparkster returns in Rocket Knight

The 16-bit era was chock full of cute little animals trying to win our hearts and slip into the cartridge slots on our consoles. Many of them faded away and deservedly so. A few, though, are still remembered fondly. Sparkster is one of the latter and Konami has announced he’s coming back may 2010 in a new game, Rocket Knight.

Sparkster first appeared on the Sega Genesis in 1993′s Rocket Knight Adventures. His games were directed by Nobuya Nakazato, who also brought us the Konami classic Contra. Though they starred a cute little animal, Sparkster’s games were more about run-and-gun action than platforming. The games really pushed the graphic and gameplay capabilities of the 16-bit era machines.

Konami releases Rocket Knight trailer

Last week we were shocked and delighted to hear that Konami is working on a new game in the Rocket Knight series. Rocket Knight Adventures was a 2D side scrolling game that came out in 1993 on the SEGA Genesis. It featured an opossum named Sparkster who wore a suit of armor, carried a sword and jet pack and fought evil looking pigs. It was one of my favorite Genesis games and now we get to see a video of the upcoming game for new systems in action.
