uDraw fails to meet expectations on PS3, Xbox 360
Did you know uDraw released for the Xbox 360 and PS3? That’s okay because a lot of people didn’t know either. Well, it was either that or they just didn’t care. Even though uDraw saw considerable success on the Wii, it sunk like a stone when versions were released for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Sales were so bad, THQ had to revise its net sales expectations for its fiscal 2012 third quarter by 25 percent. THQ originally expected sales of between $510 million and $550 million Ouch.
Radio Shack’s Black Friday 2011 gaming and tech deals
Radio Shack’s print ad for Black Friday was part of the stuffing in this year’s newspaper turkey. OK, so it’s a fat, prize-winning turkey for couponers and deal hunters.
Call of Duty franchise breaks another record
As expected, Activision is going to make a ton of money off Modern Warfare 3. The publisher raised its financial outlook for the rest of the year under the assumption Modern Warfare 3 and Skylanders: Spryo’s Adventure would sell exceptionally well. Spryo is doing just fine, but MW3 is firmly in record-breaking territory. In one day, MW3 made over $400 million and sold over 6.5 million copies in North America and the United Kingdom.
Activision Blizzard makes more money than expected, preps new Call of Duty title
Activision is holding a conference call today to report its third quarter 2011 earnings. Before the call takes place, Activision Blizzard sent out a press release detailing how well it did in the quarter. The company reported revenues of $754 million, which is $9 million more than what it earned in the third quarter of 2010. The majority of Activision Blizzard’s earnings ($427 million) came from digital purchases. More than half of the company’s revenues came from digital channels.
EA thinks it sold 5 million copies of Battlefield 3
Electronic Arts is very pleased with the performance of Battlefield 3. Today, the publisher announced Battlefield 3 has sold five million units around the world. This number is based on EA’s “internal estimates”, so BF3 may have sold more or less than that. EA’s estimates have also led the company to believe BF3 is now the fastest selling game in the company’s history.
FIFA 12′s first week sales numbers best Gears of War 3
EA’s FIFA series has been garnering strong reviews and sales for a while now. FIFA 12′s first-week sales numbers have given the publisher reason to run around shouting “GOO- A-LLL” at obnoxious volumes. The soccer sim is now the fastest selling sports game in history, selling 3.2 million copies in its first week on shelves. That makes it the best selling game of 2011 so far, eclipsing even Gears of War 3. FIFA 12 for the iPhone and iPad has sold 879,000 units already.
Star Wars MMO expecting astronomical sales
The latest sales estimates on Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWtOR) are at three hundred million units – that’s the population of the United States. Compare that number to the roughly 11 million active players of the most successful MMO game so far, World of Warcraft, to get an idea of what an Alderaan-shattering amount of success is expected here.
The future is grim for the Red Faction franchise
The Red Faction series has had a good run, but THQ has decided it’s time to hang it up. Following the disappointing reviews and sells for both Red Faction: Battlegrounds and Red Faction: Armageddon, THQ doesn’t see a reason why the franchise should continue as it is now.
3DS sales dropped since second week after release
Nintendo has a communications problem with the Nintendo 3DS. The 3DS has sold over 3 million units so far, but it isn’t selling as well as Nintendo expected. In a financial results briefing, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata explained that sales of the 3DS were quite high during its first week of release, but sales started to drop off from the second week onward. This is true for major territories such as Europe, Japan and the United States. The Japan earthquake isn’t to blame for these lower than expected sales. Iwata said he believes the public just doesn’t understand the 3DS.
