Opinion: Duke Nukem might be sexist but it could be far worse

Fox News recently went back on its anti-games soapbox. Much like it had its two cents to throw in about the deplorable, sexist, violent [insert other negative entertainment-related adjectives here] nature of highly anticipated “M”-rated games, Fox’s wrathful gaze has turned toward the game Duke Nukem Forever.

Facebook gaming, the final frontier.

Almost every license that can become a browser-based game is getting that treatment, so it figures Star Trek would be coming along. Alternate Disc-Tractions: Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5 DVD review

The final season of the groundbreaking revamp TV series, Battlestar Galactica, wraps up all of the mysteries, visions and even relationships that had been developing throughout the series. Even with all the bonus footage, extended episodes and commentary tracks, that doesn’t mean the ending will make any more sense.

But do not despair. This is the perfect followup to the amazing first half of the final season and a beautiful, even if somewhat intentionally enigmatic conclusion to the series.

Gamertell Review: Star Ocean: The Last Hope for Xbox 360

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is the latest installation to the Star Ocean franchise and serves as the prequel to the entire series of games released so far. Players are thrust into a not so distant future where the planet Earth we know and love is no longer able to sustain life on its surface thanks to the mass destruction resulting from World War III. Earthlings now have no other choice but to rely on the ambitions of the Space Reconnaissance Force and must abandon their beloved blue planet for the great star ocean in search of another terrain capable of sustaining life.

Gamertell Review: Quark on DVD

Title: Quark: The Complete SeriesPrice: $19.95Release Date: September 2, 2008Studio: Sony PicturesRating: Not Rated.Pros: A relatively unknown sci fi parody TV series resurrected for home video for the first time. Hokey humor, cheesy Star Trek homages, blatant stereotyping and over-the-top acting make this so bad it’s funny.Cons: Complete lack of extra features.Overall Score: One thumb up, one thumb sideways; 80/100; B-; * * * out of five.

Yes, the name might be a bit confusing to some. This is not a desktop publishing application. This is not about subatomic particles. It is not even about a big-eared bartender from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Quark is, simply put, a disco parody of mid-’70s sci fi that’s so bad, it’s good…

Hugo Award for graphic novels in 2009: Are videogames next?

ICV2 has just reported that graphic novels will soon be eligible for the prestigious Hugo Award. The notion does have to be ratified, but if it goes through, “‘Any science fiction or fantasy story told in graphic form appearing for the first time in the previous calendar year’ will be eligible.” It got me thinking – if graphic novels are enjoying literary legitimacy these days, could videogames be next?

We all have our favorite examples of which games we feel qualify as bona-fide works of art or pieces of literature.
