Devil Survivor becomes Devil Survivor Over Clock on the 3DS

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor may not even be two years old yet, but it’s already getting a reboot. The strategic DS RPG is going to appear on the 3DS as Devil Survivor Over Clock. Yes, the 3DS is backwards compatible and yes, the original Devil Survivor is pretty easy to find. I don’t see the point of the port either…

Gamertell’s top 10 2009 DS games

Tons of fantastic DS games were released in 2009, and now that we’re entering into 2010 it seems only fitting to honor 10 of the best released last year. Compling such a list is a difficult task, especially considering how many fantastic games were released in 2009, but the final choices mark the best of the best of 2009.

There are quite a few others games though, that do deserve to be acknowledged as runners-up. Games that were good, but not quite good enough to make the top 10. For exampe, there was The Legendary Starfy, Dragon Quest V, Pokemon Platinum, Phantasy Star Zero, Rhythm Heaven and Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure. Many great games were released, but only 10 can be considered the best.

And now, on to Gamertell’s 10 best DS games released in 2009…

Opinion: When a DS device is an in-game tool, a game becomes believable

Video games are designed to take players into an entirely new world. The goal of developers is to make this new environment identifiable, and to create an atmosphere where players can lose themselves in this virtual world and feel they’re a part of events taking place. An interesting mechanic that can be used to help players make a connection is to include some familiar aspects or tools from daily life into the game. Developers have been particularly successful in this endeavor when it comes to DS games.

When game developers choose to create a DS game in a manner where the DS a person is playing on is involved in the story, it can help break down reality’s boundaries. What if a game could really cause a person to die in a week? What if your DS could help you find your long lost father? Many times the scenarios presented by video games are totally unbelievable, but by including a familiar device, a story becomes more plausible.

Let’s look at Contact first. In this game you’re supposed to be helping an alien being, the Professor, and a boy he recruited named Terry, find the necessary components to repair his space ship. At the beginning of the game, the professor tells you that, while Terry is doing all the dirty work, you are using the DS device to control and guide his every move…

Gamertell Review: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor for DS

After spending two weeks with Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, there’s no doubt in my mind that it is one of the blockbuster DS games. Devil Survivor is one of those games you can play over and over, discovering new things every single time. Not only that, it’s one of those rare games which successfully blends multiple genres (visual novel, strategic RPG and RPG) into an entirely new gaming experience.

Every time I’d pick up Devil Survivor to play, I’d get caught up in the virtual version of Tokyo and the characters’ plight. Just one more hour to level up characters and work on fusing and developing demons. One more hour to find out how to prevent the events in that day’s Laplace Email. It’s delightfully deep and addicting…

Show demons who’s boss in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor

Ah Atlus – just when I think I’m going to totally curb my video game spending, you announce another must-have title. The Shin Megami Tensei series recently debuted on the DS, and Atlus has decided that yes, people in North America deserve this intriguing game as well. So, on June 23, 2009, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor is going to be released in the US for $29.99. Nice catch!

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor is an interesting little game. It has adventure, strategic RPG and standard RPG elements all fused into a single cartridge. Impressive. Demons have taken over Tokyo, and everyone in the city’s trapped. In order to save the city and everyone in it, you’ll have to join up with friends and make the demons fight amongst, and destroy, themselves…
