SNK releasing Neo Geo Portable pre-loaded with 20 games

neo geo portable device

If there’s one thing to be sure of in the gaming world, it’s that the Neo Geo won’t back down. True, SNK’s consoles and handhelds never achieved the same level of fame as the Nintendo, Sega or Sony devices, but that didn’t stop the company from trying. Even the Neo Geo Pocket Color experienced a more »

The King of Fighters Encounter offers a new approach to fighting

SNK Playmore and Kayac have just added a rather unique take on King of Fighters to iTunes. The King of Fighters Encounter is a combination of social networking game and StreetPass seeking. Well, StreetPass is what 3DS owners would call it. I guess everyone else would refer to it as a tag-mode game.

When you download the free The King of Fighters Encounter to your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, you’ll be able to take part in fighters with your favorite KoF characters without expending any effort…

Review: Shock Troopers for PS3

Shock Troopers is one of the latest NeoGeo games to make its way to the PlayStation Network. We’ve covered other NeoGeo titles for PSN in the past including Baseball Stars 2 and King of Fighters ’95. Much like those games, Shock Troopers is a straight up port that adds a Network Play option. Is it fun? You’re about to find out.

Third batch of NeoGeo Station releases is quite small

We’ve been seeing gradual PS3 and PSP releases of classic NeoGeo games until the NeoGeo Station moniker, but the latest batch is going to be a bit of a shock to classic game fans. Not because the games being added are breathtaking or highlight anticipated classics, but because there are just so few of them. I mean, we have 12 NeoGeo Station releases so far, so you’d think the third batch would include more than two new additions.

But hey, at least we’re still getting something. So no need getting upset over the fact that the only games in the third batch are Shock Troopers and World Heroes

King of Fighters XIII playable at EVO 2K and Otakon, comes with 4 CD soundtrack

Atlus is really going to spoil people who purchase The King of Fighters XIII for their PS3 or Xbox 360. I mean, you think it would be enough to get a great fighting game with lots of characters, a Story mode with multiple endings influenced by decisions players make with playing, three kinds of Online Versus matches, a Mission mode and a Tutorial mode. Nope! Atlus decided that each pre-ordered copy of the game should also come with a four CD soundtrack set…

SNK Playmore USA releases 8 NEO-GEO games via the Playstation Store

NEO-GEO was a force to be reckoned with when it came out back in the ’80s. OK, so maybe that’s not entirely true but it still had some awesome games that are making a comeback to your PSP and PS3 starting.

Starting July 19, 2011, SNK Playmore USA has re-released eight NEO-GEO titles to the Playstation store in North America for your downloading pleasure. The titles will be released as Playstation Minis and will be featured in both the “New Releases” category and the “SNK NEOGEO” Featured Publishers page.

Crown the new King of Fighters in October 2011

Atlus’ E3 2011 announcement of King of Fighters XIII was a bit of a surprise. It wasn’t totally unexpected, since the company has covered a North American release of a King of Fighters game before, King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood (GBA), but I’m sure it still raised a few eyebrows. Prepare for that to happen again, since the PS3 and Xbox 360 game is going to be released sooner than you think. Like, October 25, 2011 soon.

In addition to the release date announcement, Atlus also released a brand new, gameplay trailer…

The King of Fighters-i 002 available now, free update coming in October

While Street Fighter is awesome and all, some fighting game fans prefer other series. Like, for example, Guilty Gear, Tekken or Soul Calibur. Another beloved franchise is The King of Fighters, which is now appearing for the first time on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch as The King of Fighters-i 002, giving iOS device fighting fans another great game to choose from.

The King of Fighters-i 002 is a 2D fighter with 14 playable characters…

E3 2011: Atlus enters the ring with The King of Fighters XIII

The Atlus Faithful email newsletter has been sending out the company’s E3 2011 announcements to fans this morning. Which means instead of sending out standard press releases, everyone was alerted about the company’s two surprise releases, The King of Fighters XIII (PS3, Xbox 360) and Devil Survivor 2 (DS) at the same time. We already went over Devil Survivor 2, so now it’s time to cover Atlus’ Q4 2011 release, KoF XIII

Important Importables: Neo Geo Pocket

While it didn’t receive a lot of publicity or recognition, there was a portable handheld system that was fairly successful in Japan, and even received a release in North America and Europe. I’m talking about SNK’s Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color series of systems. The first generation, the Neo Geo Pocket, was a Japan exclusive, but its successor, the Neo Geo Pocket Color actually did find its way outside of Japan.

Both handhelds were fairly unique, with a handful of well known titles. They were almost like having small, portable arcade systems, and are notable for being one of the first handheld consoles to have an analog stick. Both systems also had CPUs built by Toshiba. They were also region-free units, allowing owners to import to boost their libraries.

Now, they’re somewhat difficult to find. If you can, and you enjoy portable gaming, it may be worth the effort…
