Just got a message from my friend Zach Wigal of Gamers Outreach Foundation about an upcoming video game convention, Gamers 4 Giving, a charity event to be held at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center located on 900 Oakwood Street in Ypsilanti, Michigan (USA), starting 2 p.m. on February 27, 2009, and ending March 1, 2009. This year’s Gamers 4 Giving event will focus on raising funds to catapult the GOF 2009 community initiatives.

Opinion: Casual and multiplayer games could carry people through the recession

It’s no secret that people are cutting back. Unemployment, foreclosure and all sorts of other calamities are befalling families across the US, so it’s no surprise that for many people, entertainment is taking a backseat. Midway and EA are just two of the companies facing some serious losses.

Now is the time when companies have to rethink how they market games. Video game developers and publishers have to rely on casual and multiplayer games. While what TIME says holds true, that is that people will rely on forms of entertainment that will provide the best…

A few of our favorite Caramelldansen videos

If you’re a YouTube fan, chances are you’ve encountered the Caramelldansen phenomenon, a strange, 30~120 second video that shows cartoon-style versions of popular anime, cartoon or video game characters doing a bunny-wiggle dance to the hyper song “Caramelldansen.” After sitting through the entire video, you’ll be a bit stunned, perhaps wondering what is going on. Yes, you’ve stumbled upon an outdated meme.

Since then, fans have decided to dance the “Caramelldansen” dance, dragging their favorite characters with them. No series is safe, no character too unlikely, to become…

New Character revealed for Super Smash Brothers Brawl

Nintendo today (August 1, 2007) unveiled another new character for upcoming Wii brawler Super Smash Brothers Brawl: Ike from the Fire Emblem series. Ike has an apparently gilded sword and boasts a special move called “Aether.” Also announced today was a new item, the pitfall from Animal Crossing (which is actually useful now).

The game itself is a sequel to the excellent Super Smash Brothers (N64) and Super Smash Brothers Melee (Gamecube) fighting games that pit Nintendo franchise characters against one another in wild, anything-goes matches within ever-changing environments. Both prequels have been…

Nintendo’s E3 2007 press conference wrap-up

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime was in high spirits today (July 11, 2007) as he opened Nintendo’s annual E3 press event, rattling off sales figures that indicated Nintendo world domination, especially in the expanding non-traditional markets.

The conference was peppered by montages showing just how much media attention the Wii (and the DS) is receiving by mainstream media, and how far the Nintendo has penetrated the non-gamer marketing, showing families, women, older people, and even toddlers getting down with all the Nintendo action. Iwata summed it up in …
