Syfy enters the social gaming market

Syfy is known for its television content, but gaming hasn’t been on the network’s radar until recently. As the year goes on, expect to see games published by Syfy Games showing up in the United States on Facebook. After the United States has served its purpose as a fertile testing ground, Syfy Games will extend its reach to other countries and social networks.

Debbie Gibson and Tiffany star in Syfy’s Mega Python vs. Gatoroid

Yeah, you saw that right. SyFy today sent me a rough-cut screener for its upcoming TV movie featuring 1980s mall tourin’ pop singers Debbie Gibson and Tiffany (Tiffany Renee Darwish).

Titled Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, this two-hour made-for-cable flick continues SyFy’s love of mega creature battles and, seemingly, the ’80s. It will premiere 9 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2011, on the SyFy channel.

Gamertell Preview: WCG Ultimate Gamer Season 2, Episode 3

AJ received a double dose of heartbreak last week on World Cyber Games Ultimate Gamer. He got sent home and is out of the running for the $100,000 prize. Also, he’s no longer able to kick back in the cushy Ultimate Gamer pad and hang out with Faye. It was a hard fall from grace, considering he placed first in the “real life” challenge.

Kat and Ryan formed an unlikely alliance. It could be short-lived as…

Gamertell Preview: WCG Ultimate Gamer returns to SyFy tonight (August 19, 2010)

TV has been doing shows about competitive gaming since capitalized on the arcade craze of the ’80s. The latest TV show to try and capture the competitive fire of high level video gaming is World Cyber Games: Ultimate Gamer on Syfy. It combines gaming challenges with Survivor-style elimination games to eventually award a $100,000 grand prize to the Ultimate Gamer.

Ultimate Gamer reality TV game show returning to SyFy

The SyFy Channel is bringing back the reality game show Ultimate Gamer for a second season. The premiere episode of WCG Ultimate Gamer 2 will air on SyFy at 11:00 p.m. (ET) on August 19, 2010.

The show, much like other pseudo-reality game shows, pits 12 gamers against each other in trumped up competitions that are somehow related to video games. If it is like the first season of Ultimate Gamer (check out our preview) of the series, contestants will partake in three challenges each episode and hope to not be eliminated so they can compete in the final episode.

SyFy’s Red Faction: Origins TV movie bridges gap between Guerilla and Armageddon

Video game-based TV shows don’t have a track record any better than game movies. Anyone remember the Mortal Kombat TV show? Oh, the horror. That hasn’t stopped publisher THQ from teaming up with SyFy on a TV movie: Red Faction Origins. The game will be set 25 years after Red Faction Guerilla and leads into upcoming game Red Faction Armageddon...

THQ and SyFy collaborate on Red Faction and Ghost Hunters Academy

THQ and SyFy are pretty good buddies. In February, 2010, the two companies arranged a mutually beneficial partnership that would help promote SyFy shows and THQ games. The first project the two companies decided to work together to on is a de Blob TV series for kids that can be shown on the SyFy channel and website. Now, they’re working some magic on Red Faction and Ghost Hunters Academy.

THQ’s Red Faction games, which have appeared on the GameCube, PS2, PS3, Xbox and Xbox 360 and both Mac and Windows PC, will be moving to the small screen. A two hour Red Faction movie is going to appear on SyFy, and it may even end up leading to a Red Faction TV series. SyFy will also help THQ produce the next entry in the Red Faction series.

Conversely, SyFy’s TV series Ghost Hunters Academy will be heading to the small screen…

Syfy filling out its gaming section, rebranding it as SyFy Games

Syfy had slowly been building up its catalog of games since the birth of their website in 2008. It had regularly been growing throughout 2009. Now, with the success of the gaming portion of the site, Syfy is creating a site for specifically gaming, Syfy Games.

Though the Syfy website already has a number of games like Dark Orbit, Deepolis and 9 Dragons, they are going to be adding many more. Craig Engler, SVP and GM of Syfy Digital, let the world know about this move.

Alternate Disc-Tractions: Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5 DVD review

The final season of the groundbreaking revamp TV series, Battlestar Galactica, wraps up all of the mysteries, visions and even relationships that had been developing throughout the series. Even with all the bonus footage, extended episodes and commentary tracks, that doesn’t mean the ending will make any more sense.

But do not despair. This is the perfect followup to the amazing first half of the final season and a beautiful, even if somewhat intentionally enigmatic conclusion to the series.

New Battlestar Galactica series to begin airing January 2010

SyFy released a press release today (July 27, 2009) announcing that the new Battlestar Galactica series, titled Caprica, will start airing 9:00 p.m., January 22, 2010, on the SyFy channel.

The first episode will be two hours long and the series will air in the previous series’ time slot of 10:00 p.m., Friday nights. This is liking an airing of the…
