The best bits of Nintendo’s 2011 3DS conference
Today’s the day! At noon in Japan on September 13, 2011 Nintendo held its 3DS conference to talk about its plans for its latest handheld this year. The conference just ended a short while ago, and quite a few interesting details were revealed. If you weren’t watching the live stream of the video at Nintendo’s 3DS conference page because you couldn’t understand Japanese, then read on to see some of the best information to come out of the event.
We’ll go over the news in bulletpoints, just to keep things easy and organized. While the conference started with some snippets of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii) and general 3DS game footage, it was mostly a platform for game announcements. Almost 30 of the videos shown will be released by Nintendo online through the eShop for people to watch. Remember, the release dates and windows all relate to the Japanese releases…
E3 2011: Tecmo Koei has a 4-game lineup
Tecmo Koei doesn’t have too many games at E3 2011 this year, but it still has a presence at E3 2011. The company has four games to show off at the show, which are available on multiple platforms. Whether you prefer consoles, cell phone gaming or only play on Facebook, Tecmo Koei may have a game for you.
Let’s look at the games attendees can test out and see at Tecmo Koei’s booth in the South Hall…
E3 2010: Valhalla Game Studios’ first game to be announced
It is official – Valhalla Game Studios will reveal its first game project at E3 2010. There’s no way it could be a rumor, since Valhalla’s own Tomonobu Itagaki, of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive fame, said it himself. Itagaki made the announcement today (June 8, 2010) at the Valhalla Game Studios site.
Itagaki’s E3 2010 announcement is the first confirmed news provided about Valhalla’s first game. He goes on to call it an “all-new project” and also discusses how his, and Valhalla’s, goal is to make something entertaining for players. Also interesting is the fact that Itagaki’s statement ends with his request that people let Valhalla know what they think about the studio’s first game after it has been announced and revealed….

Hut, hut, hut! That distinctive call is familiar to any football gamer of the 80s and 90s who spent hours racking up the tackles in Tecmo Bowl. The legendary football game returns this week through the Xbox Live Arcade in Tecmo Bowl Throwback. This game is a remake of 1993′s Tecmo Super Bowl that includes the option for high definition play…
UFO abducts Monster Racers and Monster Rancher DS
If you were still hoping that Monster Rancer DS would be released this month, even though there’s been little to no news about it, you should probably sit down. Tecmo Koei isn’t handling it anymore. UFO Interactive has taken the reigns for both Monster Rancher DS and Monster Racers.
Both games are still coming out, but the timeline is different. Monster Racers is going to be released in Summer 2010, and Monster Rancher DS‘s release date is now unknown. Originally, Monster Rancher DS was supposed to be out March 30, 2010, with Monster Racers following a few months later.
In each game you’re working with monsters…
Nintendo publishing Wii-exclusive Samurai Warriors 3
Nintendo picked today, March 16, 2010, to announce that Samurai Warriors 3 is coming to North America. Yup, Nintendo’s working with Tecmo Koei to bring us the Wii-exclusive entry in the Samura Warriors series. It’s nice to see companies work together for the greater good. Samurai Warriors 3 came out December 3, 2009 in Japan, and has a Fall 2010 release window for North America.
Samurai Warriors 3 is a hack-and-slash action game set in the Sengoku period of Japanese history…
Dead or Alive creator Itagaki settles lawsuit with Tecmo
Tomonobu Itagaki, the former Team Ninja head who sued Tecmo over unpaid wages, announced a settlement February 26, 2010, with his former employer. Itagaki filed suit in June 2008 claiming unpaid wages and disingenuous statements by former Tecmo CEO Yoshimi Yasuda. No details of the settlement were given, so instead of juicy financial news Itagaki’s release teases us by talking about an upcoming project.
ESRB offers hilarious description of Dead or Alive Paradise (Updated)
Sometimes I wonder if the term “fan service” was created with the Dead or Alive series in mind. The latest game, a PSP game called Dead or Alive Paradise certainly goes above and beyond to deliver the kind of pandering some fans of the series expect to see. It’s a vacation simulation game, with volleyball, mini-games and the ability to make friends with the even more scantily clad than usual Dead or Alive women so you can pictures to oogle later. It’s due out in 2010, and was recently was rated by the ESRB, with some interesting results.
The ESRB description for Dead or Alive Paradise starts out fairly mundane. It announces that it is a PSP game that the ESRB decided to tag a Mature rating on because it has partial nudity, sexual themes and simulated gambling. Pretty typical, and nothing special. But then it moves on to the rating summary, which offers the best video game description I’ve seen in at least a month.
The ESRB summary goes a little something like this…
Fatal Frame IV’s fan translation patch complete, allows all regions to enjoy the game
Were you one of the many Wii owners disappointed that Nintendo and Tecmo had let you down and left Fatal Frame 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse a Japanese exclusive that you’d never get the chance to play? Well, there’s a ray of sunshine today! If you have the funds and the means, you can purchase a Japanese copy of Zero: Tsukihami no Kamen, pop it in your Wii and play it in English without any region conflicts. Even better, you don’t need to mod your Wii with the Homebrew Channel to do it!
The staff at the Fatal Frame 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse Translation site took care of everything for you. They completely translated the game, and created a patch that works on any Wii, regardless of firmware or region. They have everything you need. There are patch loaders for Wiis running all versions of Nintendo firmware, a patch loader for people with modded Wiis, the actual patch with all the necessary data and an additional costume pack. There is also a comprehensive set of instructions to guide you through the patch installation process, whether your system is online or off. Best of all, the patch can easily be uninstalled if necessary.
Basically, it just involves putting the patch, loader and costumes onto an SD card, popping it into your Wii and running the data to install it. Uninstalling is as simple as running the patch data from the SD card again and choosing the install option when it pops up.
The final piece of the puzzle though is the game. You’ll have to purchase a copy if you want to make good use of the patch…
Tecmo bringing sexy back to the PSP with Dead or Alive Paradise
Tecmo will be redefining the word “handheld” with its latest announcement, Dead or Alive Paradise, which promises to bring everyone’s favorite batch of barely clothed busty babes to Sony PSP owners in Japan this coming Spring 2010.
Paradise is what you might call a stripped down (pun intended) version of the Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball (DOAX) series. DOAX is a game that revolves around the lovely ladies of the DOA series prancing around in sometimes barely-existent bikinis on a beautiful private beach doing anything but fighting.
