TGS 2010: Konami booth to have 8 of its own games, 6 from other publishers
Konami’s among the many companies announcing its Tokyo Game Show 2010 plans. Which is to be expected, of course. The event is September 16-19, 2010, and companies want attendees to be informed well in advance so people know whether or not they want to visit certain booths. Konami’s booth will be quite full this year, with eight new Konami games and six games from other, smaller publishers on display…
THQ’s Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 will require code for online play
While EA was the first to announce its “online pass” program, THQ’s UFC Undisputed 2010 was the first game to hit the market with the feature enabled. THQ charged $5 to access online features of the game unless you entered the code that came with a new copy. THQ seriously fumbled the online pass implementation, not even acknowledging its existence until review copies of the game spilled the news.
THQ releases first quarter results, loses $30 million
THQ shared the financial results for the first quarter of the companies fiscal 2011 year. THQ reported $149.4 million in sales, down from $243.5 million in the previous year. The majority of THQ’s sales this quarter came from UFC: Undisputed 2010. However this title didn’t sell as well as its predecessor. These lackluster sales in addition to no title to fill the gap left behind by Red Faction Guerrilla caused THQ to lose $30.1 million this quarter.
Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII bundle with two free games $299 on Amazon
The Xbox 360 S has officially taken hold. It’s time for retailers to start clearing out its inventory of older Xbox 360 models. The special that Amazon is holding on August 2, 2010 may be the first of many Xbox 360 fire sales. Amazon currently sells a Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 bundle for $299, but it will sweeten the deal next week by throwing in two additional games for free.
UFC Undisputed 2010′s sales lagging
It seems a large number of gamers are taking an “online pass” on THQ’s UFC Undisputed sequel.
Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian has released his research saying that sales of UFC Undisputed 2010 are below expectations. THQ’s take on the popular MMA genre was one of the surprise hits of 2009, selling nearly 4 million copies.
Below the Belt: UFC Undisputed 2010′s online pass becomes online debacle
As the first title to hit the market requiring either an in-package code or $5 to play online, millions of eyes were on UFC Undisputed 2010. So far, the online pass, or at least its implementation, has helped THQ about as much as a layoff playing “B.A. Baracus” has helped Rampage Jackson stay in fighting shape.
Unline EA Sports, who made a big effort in announcing its online pass well before the release of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, THQ did virtually nothing to inform consumers. Many were surprised and, even worse, the packaged-in code with new copies of the game was buried under advertising materials. This confusion caused some Undisputed owners to purchase an online pass even though they already had a code for free access inside their game case.
Rumor: UFC Undisputed 2010 will require code for online play
Just days ago I opined that EA wouldn’t be alone in requiring a code to play its titles online. I am not used to being proven right quite this fast. Multiple sources are leaking that UFC Undisputed 2010, one of the year’s most anticipated sports titles, will require a code as well.
