Sony is dedicated to using PSN Pass in future games

Resistance 3 led the pack by being the first Sony-published game to feature PSN Pass. PSN Pass is the key to unlocking multiplayer content in applicable games. Over the weekend, we told you how Uncharted 3 will be the next game to use PSN Pass. We should just get used to it now because Sony isn’t going to stop using PSN Pass anytime soon. In fact, the publisher is going to implement it into more games going forward.

Uncharted 3 next in line to require PSN Pass

Uncharted 3 will be the second PS3-exclusive game to use the company’s PSN Pass. The PSN Pass is a one-time-use code that will come with new copies of the game. It enables players to access the multiplayer components in Uncharted 3, which is something Naughty Dog and Sony have been promoting. This confirmation comes from an interview conducted by The Vault with the manager of software for Sony Spain, Juan Jimenez

Heavy Rain developer blames $13 million lost on used games sales

Used game sales have had such an effect on publishers, a few of them decided to make up for lost revenue by charging for multiplayer. EA, Warner Bros., Ubisoft and Sony are some of the companies that charge an extra $10 for a pass to access multiplayer content from used games. New games come with an activation code that unlocks multiplayer features at no additional charge. Used game sales also affect developers too. Quantic Dream for example lost upwards to $13 million due to used sales of Heavy Rain according to the company’s founder Guillaume de Fondaumiere.

Take-Two chairman doesn’t want to punish used game buyers

This year has been cruel to consumers who buy used games. Electronic Arts started using its Online Pass to prevent used game buyers from accessing a title’s online content. The only way around it is to pay for the pass. THQ has done the same thing with WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011. Every new copy of the game comes with a code to unlock online play. It’s also available as a separate purchase for $10. Not everyone feels this is the way to go. Take-Two’s chairman Strauss Zelnick feels less focus should be placed on used games.

Best Buy rolls out its game trade-in program at 600 stores

The used game sale waters are getting crowded. Best Buy has revealed it is accepting game trade-ins at 600 stores and adding more as time goes on. Most stores will handle the trades at the customer service area, while some will have their own dedicated trade desks.

Target enters used game trade-in market

Retailers including Best Buy, Walmart and Toys R’ Us have tried to get a piece of lucrative used games market.

Now Target is taking aim at GameStop‘s bread and butter.

Target has begun accepting used games, other electronics and DVDs in Northern California…

THQ doesn’t despise used games

Yesterday (August 23, 2010) we reported on THQ’s creative director Cory Ledesma’s comments on used game sales. Ledesma said THQ didn’t care about consumers who buy used games because the process cheats THQ out of a profit. Ledesma’s words raised a bit of a ruckus online as it appeared THQ wanted to punish customers who buy used. Danny Bilson, THQ’s head of core games, provided damage control against Ledesma statements while speaking to Eurogamer.

UK chain Tesco taking games for store credit

United Kingdom gamers who live near Tesco stores can now trade in games for store credit.

MCV reports that at least 60 Tesco stores are taking game trades and offering the used games for resale. The chain’s newspaper advertisements are touting the program as well and noting the trade credit applies to anything in the store.

Glyde attempts to take online chunk out of used video game sales

As Gamertell has reported, it seems that everybody wants a piece of the used game market. Not everybody, however has the genius behind the success of eBay Motors as part of their braintrust. Former eBay Motors head Simon Rothman has created a site called Glyde, which sells used games, books, CDs and DVDs. According to a VentureBeat report, 350,000 users are now participating. The site has only been in business for five months, so those numbers are turning heads.
