Epic Games moves in a new direction with Fortnite
Naughty Dog wasn’t the only developer that announced something completely unexpected at the VGAs last night. Epic Games also unveiled one of its latest projects that doesn’t appear to be anything like the studio has put out recently. The game is called Fortnite, and it’s not something that involves guys carrying big guns and wearing heavy armor.
Naughty Dog reveals its latest post-apocalyptic game, The Last of Us
Naughty Dog is taking a big step back from the world of Uncharted in its next PS3 exclusive game called The Last of Us. We were teased about this title in the days leading up to the Spike TV Video Game Awards, and now it’s all clear. The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic game, but the world was not destroyed by bombs or an alien threat. The culprit this time is a modern plague.
The DICE Interactive Achievement Awards show shames the VGAs
The 14th annual DICE Interactive Achievement Awards show went down in Las Vegas yesterday evening. DICE is an event that allows videogame developers to do what they do best – talk about games. It isn’t an event that’s centered on promoting a product or teasing release dates. You could look at it as one of the most intellectually focused videogame events of the year. The awards show that takes place during DICE is one that should be aired on cable instead of the VGAs.
[Update] Mass Effect 3 is a fight for Earth
Yesterday, EA spoiled its big reveal of Mass Effect 3 by putting up a placeholder page on EAs online store. Today at the Spike Video Game Awards, the curtain was finally pulled back on Mass Effect 3. This isn’t a prequel or a multiplayer spin-off of any kind. This is a straight up sequel that brings the fight to Earth.
Image from new BioWare game targets the innocent
BioWare’s new game is perhaps the most anticipated reveal that will happen during the Video Game Awards this Saturday. This hype train started rolling with an official image of a man aiming a sniper rifle. Shortly afterwards, BioWare started sending out QR codes that all seem to point to the Mass Effect universe. Today (November 9, 2010), CVG acquired what is says is an image still from the upcoming VGA trailer.
BioWare gives brief glimpse at next game
BioWare is almost ready to fully reveal its latest project. It has provided a really short teaser trailer today. The full reveal will be made during the 2010 Video Game Awards on Spike. The show starts on December 11, 2010 at 8pm ET or 5pm PT.
New Halo: Reach trailer revealed at Video Game Awards (with video)
A new trailer for the latest installment of the Halo franchise, Halo: Reach, was debuted at the Video Game Awards (VGAs).
Halo has been one of the most popular properties in the entertainment industry and, with this upcoming prequel, the spotlight is again on the war against the Covenant.
Although the trailer didn’t show any gameplay footage, it offered various clues about some of the features that may be included in the new game…
New Tron Legacy game trailer (with video)
One of the classics of science fiction is making its return to the movie screens with the upcoming Tron Legacy. Now, as it is the custom with most movies these days, a video game is also in the works and a quick teaser has been released.
The trailer shows several quick scenes depicting classic elements from the original movie. First you can get a glimpse of someone catching what looks like a disk, one of the staple weapons in the movie. There’s also a scene with a Recognizer, a towering two-legged machine resembling something out of Space Invaders. You can also get a look at the new version of the always awesome Light Cycles and, finally, there’s something about a virus.
2Bits: Video game industry needs an Oscar-style event (and it may already have one)
As video games continue in their quest to achieve acceptability in the eyes of the public, their cause was bolstered by the news that more individuals engage in gaming than venture to the movies. This report taken along side continuing statements that claim the industry is thriving despite tough economic times offers enough reason to believe that the state of the video game industry is in relatively good stead.
However, with the report that it is more preferable to play a video game than see a movie and news stating that games are outdoing movies in terms of revenue, it begs the question of whether or not games should receive movie-like treatment and have their own Oscar-styled event.
I believe that the time is right for such an event.
2Bits: Game industry “Oscars” would be destroyed by its own politics
The idea of a video game industry awards show, one much like the Oscars, is a pretty intriguing idea. Much like the Oscars, though, it would most likely fall apart due to industry politics.
One of the great things about entertainment is that some people do it simply because they love to do it. If not, they at least love to please an audience. However, with the multitudes of industry-specific awards, most of the love and life that went into industries including music, film and literature has disappeared…
