Opinion: Red Faction Origins press event illustrates what’s wrong with game-based movies

Syfy recently held a presser to promote its upcoming Red Faction:Origins TV movie, slated for a June 4, 2011, premiere. It’s meant to bridge the story gaps in between Red Faction: Guerilla and Red Faction: Armageddon. As Joystiq reports, it seems that director Michael Nankin can’t be bothered to play any of the video games that are his, you know, source material for the movie.

Analysis: Time is of the essence for deciding whether or not to make a live-action dead Space movie

It sounds like the team behind the Dead Space phenomenon is looking into the possibility of a live-action film to compliment the work that’s been put into the franchise. Dead Space co-creator and art director, Ian Milham, told BBC’s Newsbeat that there has been a lot of discussion about the idea but it won’t rushed more »

Alternate Disc-Tractions: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download review

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a creative amalgam of pretty much everything cool. It takes a quirky manga story, features scads of video game style fight scenes and special effects and, with a dash of eclectic European movie sensibilities (I’d say French films but would not want to offend the director), creating a funky fun film about young love.

After seeing the movie and watching several hours of the extra features, I’m now a Scott Pilgrim fan (and you will be, too, assuming you are not already, of course)…

Gamertell Movie Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series, with the film getting its title from the second book. The story revolves around 22-year-old Scott (Michael Cera), a Toronto resident and slacker extraordinaire.

Opinion: Only certain kinds of video games can inspire great movies

Fans have a love-hate relationship with movie adaptations of popular video games. For every successful transition, for example Silent Hill, there’s an In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale or Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Chances are, the movie isn’t going to live up to the game.

There’s a pattern though, found among the more successful video game movie adaptations. Look at the Resident Evil, Tomb Raider or Silent Hill movies. What do all three of these movies have in common? Not female protagonists, though that is a common tie. All three movies or movie series don’t strictly follow the game. Instead, they follow the spirit of the games.

Silent Hill is loosely adapted from the original Silent Hill movie, throwing in an occasional element from Silent Hill II as well. Tomb Raider possesses the same character and premise, but doesn’t try to exactly mimick any specific Tomb Raider games. The Resident Evil series of movies contains scenarios and characters from the games…

EA partners with Universal for Army of Two movie

Following the mid-2007 unveiling of a collaboration with 20th Century Fox to produce a movie based on The Sims franchise, Electronic Arts has now confirmed that it will be translating another of its videogame properties into a feature movie — Army of Two.

Released in March 2008 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Army of Two takes place in 1993 and follows military infantry units Elliot Salem and Tyson Rios as they take on a series of increasingly dangerous private military contracts over the course of more than a decade.

Universal will be handling production of the movie, with…
