Norwegian stores pull Call of Duty, WoW from shelves over fears they inspired a terrorist

Norwegian authorities believe Anders Behring Breivik carried out a series of violent acts July 22, 2011, including setting off a bomb in government quarters and shooting 69 people. Many of those were teenagers attending a political retreat.

In a 1,500-page manifesto posted online, the gunman apparently cited Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and World of Warcraft as games he played. According to VG 247, which picked up on a report from Norwegian paper Rogalands Avis, store Coop Norway will stop carrying 51 toys and games including World of Warcraft and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Highlights from today’s Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants Association hearing

Today is a huge day in the United States. There is an election going on that will determine which political party will be in control of many branches of government. The Supreme Court is also holding a hearing that will determine whether the States will be able to decide which videogames are too violent to be sold to minors. There is currently a 72 page transcript from the hearing available. We picked out some of the highlights that reflect both sides of the argument.

Black Ops neck breaking kill deemed too violent

Call of Duty: Black Ops was a bit too violent at times. This isn’t the opinion of an activist group who demonizes videogames whenever it can. This is the opinion of the game’s developer. Treyarch admittedly had to tone down a neck snapping attack in Black Ops because it mirrored reality too well.

Violence strikes Comic-Con, man gets stabbed near eye socket

The incident occurred in between panels for the films Resident Evil: Afterlife and Paul. Reports say two men started fighting over a seat in the auditorium’s Hall H. The fight came to a head when the suspect allegedly pulled out an object, supposedly a pen, and stabbed the victim in the face. The suspect was held down by Comic-Con attendees before the authorities arrived.

Man attempted to kill opponent over Counter-Strike match

The trouble all began when Barreaux and another gamer named Mikhael were engaged in a knife fight in Counter-Strike. Barreaux’ s character was killed by Mikhael in the end. Enraged by his loss, Barreaux spent seven months trying to locate Mikhael to exact his revenge. Barreaux found out where Mikhael lived and knocked on his door.

Rockstar Games calls out terrible parents

In an interview with Newsbeat, Rockstar developer and GTA DJ Lazlow filled questions regarding the creation of Red Dead Redemption. When asked how he felt about Rockstar being blamed for violence in children, Lazlow replied, “Our games are not designed for young people. If you’re a parent and buy one of our games for your child you’re a terrible parent.”

Gamers unite: Fight for videogame rights

Up until now videogames have been protected under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California proposed a law that would make it illegal for retailers to sell or rent violent videogames to persons under 18 years old. The Entertainment Consumers Association feels such a law is unconstitutional and should be struck down. The 9th Circuit Court of California recently agreed that videogames should be protected under the rights of free speech.

Fight over PlayStation possibly linked to triple homicide

Police suspect a fight over a PlayStation may have played a part in Monday’s events. Reports say Brooks and another individual named Anthony Barron got into a fight in a parking lot. Barron allegedly accused Cawthon of stealing a PlayStation before the fight started. Following the fight Brooks suffered a seizure and was taken to a local hospital.

Man goes crazy after playing Wii

According to The Gazette, James Williams was playing an unspecified Wii game when he got extremely angry. Williams then proceeded to bite his mother on her ankle and use his car as a battering ram. Williams allegedly struck several vehicles, a tree and a pedestrian with his car afterwards. After getting out of the car, Williams pulled out a BB gun and shot out a window of another car.

Opinion: Warning labels!? Don’t even pretend video games are as bad as cigarettes

If you thought listening to the disclaimers at the end of a commercial for medicine or reading the warning labels on the side of a cigarette pack is funny, then get a load of this.

I read the report posted on CNet by Don Reisinger which indicates that on January 7, 2009, Joe Baca, a democratic representative of California, introduced the H.R.231: The Video Game Health Labeling Act of 2009 bill to 111th Congress requesting to make it mandatory that video games that have received a rating for violence to display the following warning:

WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior.

I thought it was funny. At first…
