A look at the musical stylings of LittleBigPlanet 2′s Toy Story DLC
LittleBigPlanet 2 received some pretty cool DLC this week. The Toy Story DLC contains everything from costumes to themed levels. Along with those themed levels are a few new music tracks that were designed just for this game. The three tracks were composed by Winifred Phillips who is also known for her musical work on God of War, Spore Hero and SimAnimals. Phillips was kind enough to provide Gamertell with all three of the new music tracks for LBP2’s Toy Story DLC, and we’d like to share our thoughts about them.
Gamertell Review: Spore Hero Official Videogame Score by Winifred Phillips
From the success of the original incarnation of Spore comes a sort of spin-off for the Wii called Spore Hero. Spore Hero leaves the concept of growth and evolution behind in favor of light quests suitable for the youngest of gamers. Backing up the gameplay to Spore Hero is an original score composed by Winifred Phillips who is also responsible for creating music for other games including SimAnimals, The Maw and God of War.
Phillips’ music has always done a wonderful job of matching the vibe of a game whether the character is walking carefree through lush fields of vegetation or dealing a decisive blow to the final boss. With a game such as Spore Hero and the audience it caters to, you would imagine the soundtrack would consist of quirky or blatantly jolly songs, but Spore Hero’s soundtrack totally outdoes those expectations. The entire soundtrack is orchestral in nature and drips of complexity and style. It’s entirely possible to view Spore Hero’s music as that of a feature animated film and not that of a video game.
Gamertell Review: SimAnimals Official Videogame Score by Winifred Phillips
With a game that takes place entirely in nature, a matching soundtrack has to be available to fill in all the white noise. The soundtrack to SimAnimals fits the tone of the game perfectly starting with the whimsical opening theme to the dark tones of “Danger Woods.”
SimAnimals is a game for the Wii and DS platforms released today (January 21, 2008). It puts players in control of an all-powerful hand that can interact with plants and animals in the environment. Depending on your actions, animals will either love or hate you. It really is a better alternative to physically trying to play fetch with a real life bear.
