TGS 2011: Falcom supporting the Vita with Ys IV: Celceta No Jukai

The Vita received lots of love during the 2011 Tokyo Game Show, and Falcom was among the companies pledging to support Sony’s new system. It’s first Vita offering is going to be a reimagining of an early entry in the Ys series. Surprisingly, it’s a reimagining of a Ys game Falcom didn’t make. Ys IV‘s story will be told again in 2012 as Ys IV: Celceta no Jukai.

There were two Ys IV games before, Ys IV: Mask of the Sun (SNES, PS2) and Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys (TurboGrafx-CD) and while they weren’t identical and played different, the basic story and timing was the same…

First run of Ys I & II Chronicles is for hair metal fans

XSEED is a lot like Atlus, as it likes to make some of its releases extra special for fans. This is especially true with its Ys series releases, where there have been limited editions that include items like maps, artbooks or soundtracks. It turns out, Ys I & II Chronicles is going to even have an extra special touch to please fans. If you get an early copy, you’ll get some free music too…

XSEED reveals limited edition version of Ys: The Oath in Felghana

XSEED gave gamers the opportunity to get a limited edition of Ys 7, and it’s doing the same with Ys: The Oath in Felghana. People interested in the PSP retelling of Ys III can go for a standard edition that just comes with the game for $29.99, or a slightly more comprehensive and useful $39.99 limited edition…

Adol returns in Ys 7 on August 17

It’s time to dust off your PSP. I know there haven’t been too many games released recently, but that’s about to change thanks to XSEED. Ys 7 comes out this month, and sooner than you’d expect. August 17, 2010 is the street date for both the standard and collector’s editions.

E3 2010: Hands-on with Ys: The Oath in Felghana for PSP

Thanks to XSEED, North America is finally going to get to play Ys: The Oath in Felghana. This reimagining/retelling of Ys III was originally a Japan exclusive, only available on PCs. It was recently ported to the PSP though, and that port will be headed to the US in November, 2010. I got to learn a little about Ys: Oath in Felghana and try exploring its world a little bit during my meeting with XSEED at E3 2010.

Like the other Ys games XSEED is working on, Ys: The Oath in Felghana offers many customization options to players…

E3 2010: Hands-on with Ys 7

One of the games that was playable at my meeting with XSEED at E3 2010 was Ys 7, the entirely new entry in the Ys series created exclusively for the PSP. I got to learn about some of Ys 7‘s special features and get to do some hands-on dungeon crawling with Adol, Dogi and Mishera. Adol and Dogi have come to Altago in their adventures, and found themselves arrested while helping a gir. Altago’s king sets them free and tasks them with investigating a shrine and mysterious things happening around Altago so peace can reign…

E3 2010: A quick look at Ys I & II Chronicles for the PSP

While I didn’t get to go hands-on with Ys I & II Chronicles for the PSP during my meeting with XSEED at E3, I did get to watch lots of gameplay footage and hear all about the portable version of Ys I & II Complete. Ys I & II Chronicles contains both Ys I and Ys II, and follows the adventures of Adol Christin as he sets off to find the Books of Ys and reach the Ys continent…

XSEED creates Ys Seven Collector’s Edition and Facebook contest

I’m sure fans of the Ys series are simply happy that XSEED picked up the latest entry, Ys Seven, for a North American release on August 31, 2010. While the series is a classic and beloved, it hasn’t really enjoyed the same success as other Japanese RPGs. But XSEED decided to go a step further to make the US release even more special – it has announced a collector’s edition of the game and a Facebook contest via its XG email newsletter and Ys Series Facebook page…

Legacy of Ys: Books I & II slightly delayed, but now comes with a soundtrack

Once again, there’s another good news/bad new Atlus news report – this time about the forthcoming DS game Legacy of Ys: Books I & II. It was originally supposed to be in stores on February 10, 2009. Instead, it is ever so slightly delayed until February 24, 2009. Not a huge deal, really.

The good part is that the preorder item, which was a soundtrack CD filled with music from the game, is no longer just a preorder item. Instead, every copy of Legacy of Ys: Books I & II will come with the CD. Pretty nice bonus, especially if the buyer is a fan of the classic Ys series.

This is one of the more expensive Atlus DS games, at $34.99…

Ys I and II arriving in one DS cart, thanks to Atlus

Fans of the Ys series of RPGs will probably want to go pick up a DS. Atlus has announced that, on February 10, 2009, it will be releasing Legacy of Ys: Books I & II on the DS. The two games will be available on one cartridge for $34.99, not bad considering in Japan the two DS remakes were released separately. If you’ve never heard of the series before, they’re action/rogue-like RPGs that are somewhat similar to Legend of Zelda.

The first Ys begins with Adol Christin being tasked with defeating the evil forces and gathering the six Ys books so he can learn how to defeat the monsters and villains he’ll face and find his way to the floating land of Ys. The second Ys picks up right after the events of Ys I, with Adol finding Ys and still trying to defeat the evil forces plaguing both Ys and the lands of Esteria. The DS versions of the games are remade with better, 3D graphics…
