CrestronPerhaps more so than any other automation brand, the Crestron name is practically synonymous with advanced touchscreen remote controls, although of course the company has extended its control ecosystem to mobile platforms since tablets and smartphones have taken over the touchscreen space. What you don’t necessarily think of when you think “Crestron,” though, is having the control environment right on your TV screen. That’s generally more the domain of systems like Control4 and Savant. Until now, anyway. Crestron announced at this year’s CEDIA EXPO that its control interface will soon be coming directly to 2012 and later Samsung Smart TVs by way of a new control app.

From the press release:

“It’s like turning your Samsung Smart TV into a Crestron control interface,” said Delia Hansen, Crestron Residential Marketing Manager. “It’s not just an overlay. A translucent control menu slides out on the display, resizing the viewing area, so there’s minimal distraction from the action. Even better, there’s no need to switch inputs, completely eliminating any viewing interruption.”

“Samsung is pleased to collaborate with Crestron to incorporate home theater control to our Smart TV platform,” said Dave Das, Vice President of Home Entertainment Marketing, Samsung Electronics America. “This is an industry first — consumers will be able to manage an integrated home automation experience without taking their eyes off of their TV screen.”

I have this humorous image in my head of families sitting around the TV, not just arguing over what channel to watch, but also the air conditioning settings, the lighting level, and whether or not to draw the shades.  But that’s not all. Crestron sees this as opening up an entirely new market for its automation system: the hospitality industry. It certainly adds a lot of simple functionality for guests without putting another remote in the room that they’re likely to break or find confusing. How awesome would it be to open the door for room service without even having to get out of bed, though?
