Late last month, Jessica Lessin broke the news that Nest Labs was working on a new smoke detector. Today, the company officially unveiled the new product — called Nest Protect — which not only brings smoke detection into the Nest ecosystem, but carbon monoxide detection, as well. And, of course, it does so in that inimitable Nest style.
From the press release:
Nest Protect: Smoke + Carbon Monoxide™ does much more than just sound a shrill alarm when there’s danger in your home. It speaks to you, telling you where the danger is and what the problem is. And before it sounds a piercing alarm, Nest Protect gives you a friendly Heads-Up warning that you can silence with a wave of your hand – no more swinging towels or brooms to try to quiet a false alarm. It integrates with your mobile devices and even messages you if the batteries run low, avoiding that all-too-familiar midnight low-battery chirp.
In addition to high quality heat, smoke, and CO detectors that work in conjunction to keep you safe, Nest Protect features a number of innovations designed to make interaction more pleasant, including a quick green glow when you turn off the lights that lets you know its batteries have sufficient charge, a gentle LED pathlight to make sure you’re not fumbling around in the dark when you get up for late-night snacks or a trip to the powder room, vocal alarms that augment the usual alarm beeping, and complete interoperability with the Nest Learning Thermostat. So if your Nest Protect senses carbon monoxide, your Nest Learning Thermostat can automatically turn off the gas furnace, just in case it’s the source of the carbon monoxide leak. The Nest Protect’s activity sensors also serve to improve the Nest Learning Thermostat’s Auto-Away feature.
Nest Protect is available for pre-order now from the Nest website, as well as Amazon, for $129. It’s scheduled to ship next month in your choice of black or white, with both battery-powered and wired options available.
