powerdvd 14Want to stay up to date with all the latest video codecs and features like 4K and Blu-ray 3D? Use software for playback and you can do just that, without the need for expensive new hardware. Cyberlink recently released PowerDVD 14, the latest version of the popular DVD and Blu-ray playback software.

They key new feature of Cyberlink’s PowerDVD 14 is support for the new H.265 High Efficiency Video codec on which all 4K media is going to be based. The new video codec comes in at about half the size on average as compared to the MPEG-4 used in cable and Blu-ray for the same quality of video, and that’s only going to get better as the codec matures. Don’t be in a rush to re-encode though, if H.265 is anything like MPEG-4’s early days, you’ll be lucky to crank out two movies a day on the average PC.

Further improvements include 10GB of storage to stream your media from and the ability to cache Youtube videos for later viewing. The application is now optimized for Windows 8 touch systems, so if you’re using an all-in-one PC or touchscreen monitor to drive your media system, you’re good to go.

Cyberlink’s PowerDVD 14 is $44.95 for those who already own PowerDVD, and standalone licenses vary depending on features. Click through the source link for more details.
