Even though people have been getting their hands on it for the better part of a month, today is the official kickoff for Panasonic 3D television owners to cash in for their free Avatar Blu-ray 3D. Currently, the 42 and 50 inch sizes of the GT25 series will put you on Pandora with a free 3D Blu-ray player and 3D starter pack for as low as $1299 at delivered.

If one chooses, instead of the free player, you can get a $249 credit toward Panasonic’s SC-BTT350 3D Blu-ray Disc Home Theater System.

Existing Panasonic 3DTV owners aren’t going to be left out in the cold this time, as a mail-in rebate program has been put into place to snag the disc direct, with no day’s wages or Ebay sniping required. Once you have Avatar, Panasonic has gone an extra mile of crazy, and are actually providing a special firmware for all of their 3D sets, specifically tweaked by James Cameron to allow you to experience the movie as close to the movie theater as possible. While nothing has been announced, many remain hopeful that a similar redemption offer will be extended to owners of Panasonic 3D Blu-ray players so that owners of other TV brands could have a chance at acquiring the disc. Retail copies of Avatar 3D are not expected until at least 2012, and likely well beyond that in support of the movie’s sequel.
