It looks like everyone decided that it was easier to change the box than the TVs, and new runs of Mitsubishi‘s 3D Starter Pack will work with Samsung 3D DLPs out of the box. No more begging for IR emitters and buying up glasses and Panasonic Blu-ray players — now the full-on 3D experience is available to all DLP customers who have waited so long to make the jump to the third dimension.

A standalone adapter without glasses will be available in the near future for those who already have them. Even if your TV is “not tested,” the DLP engines in these sets are near identical — the 87 series (tested) and the 89 series (not tested) are the same TVs with a few feature tweaks that shouldn’t have anything to do with the imaging system.

The following Samsung televisions are certified compatible with the kit:

Mitsubishi Starter Kit

Did Mitsubishi develop this on its own or did Samsung participate in the development? I know this kit uses Samsung glasses, but in the Mitsubishi press statement they state Samsung parts as asked permission to sell this kit and Mitsubishi is considering this request. From this it really doesn't sound like they were collaborating. From a post on the AVSforum a poster received a letter from the Office of the President Samsung Canada stating Samsung was working on firmware to allow the non Samsung Mitsubishi 3D adapter to work with the Samsung sets, any idea why Samsung changed their mind since it sounded at the time Samsung and Mitsubishi were collaborating on this.

Instead of developing and testing all new firmware on old TVs, I believe it was decided it was far more efficient just to change the box to accept syncing with Samsung device codes. The DLP hardware is essentially identical inside, both sourced from Texas Instruments, so it's pretty easy to just do that and it works. I'm using a Mitsubishi IR emitter with a Panasonic 3D player and it works just fine.

If you'll notice, they're using Samsung glasses in the kits (the 2100 models). . They likely struck a deal to provide them with glasses, and as part of it Mitsubishi would help their customers. It's win-win for Mits, there's a lot of eager Samsung DLP owners waiting to drop $300 in their direction :)

Currently Mitsubishi is selling the kit for $449 and not offering it through any other sources. So Mitsubishi is really making a bundle on this.

They've only had them in stock a few days, it will take time for retail to do reorders, and the price to come down. There's really no difference between the two boxes, it's just software.

The box makes a request for a device ID when it's powered on, and it compares the answer against the authorized list. If it matches, it completes the handshake and moves on. That's why they could build the gobetween device and have it work on version 1.

This simple procedure appears to unlock the Mits 3DC-1000 / 3DA-1 so it works with the Samsung 3D DLP sets!

    1. Power off the adapter (leave everything plugged in and connected)
    2. Press and hold the 3D Mode button then press and hold the Power button
    3. Observe the 3D status light until it blinks. You want it to blink once, if it blinks twice (5 seconds apart) then restart at step 1.
    4. After you get the unit to blink once, release the Power button then release the 3D Mode button.

Thanks Paul, unfortunately boxes made after May 2011 no longer have that “feature” :(

Email me at my bits address will you? I think the one I just got is DOA and I want to check the behavior :)
