As any good viewer of Mythbusters knows, the hotel room remote control is one of the dirtiest things that you’re going to encounter in everyday life. That’s why, as part of a new package specifically designed for the hospitality industry, DirecTV has introduced a germ-resistant remote to try to put some of those concerns to rest.

Hotels almost never have your favorite niche channel, and when you’re away on business you miss all of your favorite shows. Since Earthbound cable companies are raising rates on the entire industry, as well as people trying to just hook up their summer home for 3 months, DirecTV has seen a big increase in customers. I’ve done a lot of traveling this year, and everywhere I go seems to be cutting the cord and signing up with them. Most hotel systems are based around collecting signals through multiple tuners and rebroadcasting them on its own closed circuit system, which is why you only have as many channels as the utility closet can hold cable boxes. Now DirecTV has developed a new distribution system that lets them use one dish, one hub, and let everyone enjoy the top 100 the way they want to.

Now if someone could only come up with a germ (and other… substances) resistant comforter…
