The day after the fireworks, MGM Home Entertainment intends to release seven “cool” movies for summer. Those movies include four “marriage movies” — Four Weddings and a Funeral, A Guy Thing, Honeymoon in Vegas, and Wedding Daze — along with Be Cool, The Cutting Edge, and Overboard.
Be Cool is, of course, based on a novel by Elmore Leonard. The Cutting Edge stars Moira Kelly (Dangerous Beauty, “The West Wing”) and D.B. Sweeney (Fire in the Sky) as polar opposites who unite for a shot at an Olympic gold medal on the ice. In Overboard, a snobby heiress (Goldie Hawn) loses her memory and is taken in by a handyman (Kurt Russell) to teach her a lesson. Russell’s character becomes taken by the heiress once her heirs are stripped from her.
A Guy Thing starring Jason Lee, Julia Stiles, and Selma Blair, is a fun wedding romp when an engaged man (Lee), who is engaged to Karen (Blair), meets the perfect girl Becky (Stiles), and comedy ensues. Comedic British antics are on display in Four Weddings and a Funeral, starring Hugh Grant (Notting Hill), Andie MacDowell (Short Cuts), and Rowan Atkinson (“Blackadder” series). Honeymoon in Vegas stars James Caan (the Godfather), Nicolas Cage (National Treasure) and Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex in the City”) in three sides of a comedic triangle. The more recent Wedding Daze stars Anderson (Jason Biggs), who is urged to propose to a stranger after losing the woman of his dreams.
