Once in a while, a truly worthwhile film unjustly slips under the radar and can, fortunately, be appreciated on Blu-ray for home viewing. Such a case is The Whistleblower, a based-on-true-story thriller starring Rachel Weisz as Kathryn Bolkovac, a Nebraska cop who, while working as a U.N. peacekeeper in Bosnia, uncovers a sex trafficking ring with ties to powerful people.

Speaking out and fighting the system puts her in danger’s path, and director Larysa Kondracki does a great job of making you feel her terror. Shot documentary style with what seem like hand-held cameras much of the time, The Whistleblower has a refreshing un-Hollywoodness, with great performances by Weisz, Vanessa Redgrave, and David Straitharn. The overall look is dark, but the HD brings out some compelling contrast in the imagery. This taut, satisfying thriller shouldn’t be missed.
