NPR (along with pretty much every other news organization in the civilized Western world) is reporting that Davy Jones, the Cute Monkee, has died:
NPR has now received a statement from a spokesman for the singer, relaying “the very sad news that Davy Jones of the Monkees died this morning in Indiantown, Fla., of a heart attack.” We’ve also confirmed the news with the local medical examiner’s office.
Remembered as much for the campy Monkees sitcom as for his musical accomplishments, Jones was a hearthrob to at least two generations of teen girls, he’ll also be remembered fondly as the man who invented Axl Rose’s single, solitary dance move*.
(*A fact that I never realized until one drunken night of karaoke in the early ’90s, when I did a blistering rendition of “Daydream Believer,” only to be asked afterward by my buddy Brian why I was ripping off Axl’s moves.)
So long, Davy. You’ll be missed.
