Our friends at Big Picture Big Sound set themselves the task of putting together a high-quality, apartment-friendly DIY home theater system in Manhattan without breaking the bank, compromising on performance, or mucking up the aesthetics of the living space. Final budget? Less than $4000. (Hey, that’s less than a week’s rent in Manhattan, isn’t it?)
Final system? A laudable mix that includes a Samsung UN55D8000 3D LED TV, a Marantz NR1402 receiver, a Mirage MX 5.1 speaker system, Panasonic DMP-BDT320 Blu-ray Player, Apple TV, and Logitech Harmony 900 Universal Remote Control. To keep things tidy, the Harmony runs in RF mode — with IR blasters attached to all of the gear hidden in the room’s classy cabinetry — and cord covers keep the pesky cables out of sight as they run around the room.
Head over to Big Picture Big Sound for more shots of the room, and a complete breakdown of the setup process and first impressions of all the gear.
