Those of us interested in solar energy as a renewable resource should certainly take notice of Sharp’s latest innovation. The company has developed a new solar photovoltaic cell that boasts an impressive 43.5 percent efficiency. (If that doesn’t sound impressive to you, consider that the photovoltaic panels on the market today weigh in with 15 to 20% efficiency, at best.
For now, the technology–which relies on Fresnel lenses to concentrate sunlight onto a “concentrator triple-junction compound solar cell”–is only used in satellites in space, but Sharp hopes to develop the technology for terrestrial use in the near future.
