No, this isn’t opposite day. Cats are not sleeping with dogs. Bill O’Reilly isn’t taking over as host of The Daily Show. But it’s hard not to read this headline from electronista in much that same spirit: Foxconn rumored to be bringing manufacturing to US.
It’s discombobulating for a number of reasons, but mostly because of the brouhaha surrounding reports from earlier this year about the working conditions of Foxconn employees who make all of our favorite iDevices (a story that This American Life broke, and then retracted due to inaccuracies).
Interestingly, the manufacturing that Foxconn may be moving to the US has nothing to do with Apple, apparently, and may well involve LCD TV manufacturing in LA or Detroit.
Wherever the new Foxconn factory is built–if rumors are true and production does come to the Colonies–don’t expect this to be a huge source of jobs, though. Apparently, the reason LCD TVs are being discussed as the likely output of this rumored new American factory is that they’re relatively easy to build and production can be largely automated.
