When we brought you news of the upcoming Iron Throne Blonde Ale from Ommegang and HBO yesterday, details were a little light — especially in the label artwork department. The official press release has just come down the pike, though, giving us not only a first glimpse at what the bottles will look like, but also a little more info on the brew itself:

“No one enjoys their job more than I do — producing and developing new brews to delight lovers of fine beer,” said Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang, “Add to that the opportunity to collaborate on a beer based on the cultural phenomenon of Game of Thrones and exploring ways to make the beer truly reflect aspects from the show. It made us approach development in a completely new way and I think the first edition Iron Throne reveals that. With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops. Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.”

Love it. Absolutely love it. The choice of Noble hops should definitely lend a more European sensibility to the Iron Throne Blonde Ale, with a more aromatic finish and less of the hop bitterness common to American brews. I think I’m almost more excited about this ale than I am the release of Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray and the longer episodes coming with Season Three, which EW revealed exclusively yesterday!
