Chances are, you have at least a handful LCD displays in your home. They seem to be everywhere, and the technology only gets better every day. However, you might be surprised to know that the science of how the screens themselves are constructed remains a mystery to the very people who make them.
The problem revolves around how the liquid crystals themselves align themselves to create the pretty pictures you see from your couch. Humans Invent has a nice write up and video with Dr. Harry Walton, Director of Optical Imaging and Display Systems at Sharp Laboratories of Europe. He goes into detail about the mystery of liquid crystal alignment as well as giving a brief overview of LCD panel construction. It’s a very fascinating article, so head over to Humans Invent to read more.
