Definitive Technology has graced these pages many times, but never with a product quite like this one.  While Definitive is well-known for its component speakers, they’re not the first name that comes to mind when you think about portable audio — especially for tablets.  All that has now changed with the introduction of the Sound Cylinder.

The Sound Cylinder is billed as a tablet speaker system, and it has a couple features that make use with tablets and other portable devices downright convenient.  The first is a clip system that attaches the speaker to most tablets, as well as many laptops.  It also doubles as a table stand for the attached tablet.  A built-in, pivoting kickstand holds your tablet at your ideal angle for viewing and listening.  Input is handled via Bluetooth or a 3.5mm jack, so odds are you have a device or 12 that can take advantage of the Sound Cylinder.  Power comes from an integrated rechargeable battery with a 10-hour battery life.

Definitive is known for its audio quality, so you can bet that was a focus of this system.  First off, this is a portable speaker with an integrated subwoofer.  While it can’t be huge, just the effort of including one deserves some applause.  The side firing sub compliments the stereo speakers, ensuring full-range audio makes it from your device to your ears.  Definitive has also included Surround Array image enhancement processing that creates a life-like soundstage to extend audio beyond the compact dimensions of the cylinder.

The Sound Cylinder is also well built, with a mix of aluminum and magnesium alloy parts to keep it lightweight.

The Sound Cylinder will make its debut at CES this month, and will be available from retailers and Definitive’s own on-line store later this month for an MSRP of $199.
