If you’re an impulse shopper, get ready to stop worrying if there are enough operators standing by; Panasonic has taken a huge step that has always been the promise of connected television: You see it, you buy it. You can browse the entire HSN Inc. catalog through the app on your TV, watch the presentation videos, and order with the click of a remote. Shop by Remote will be available on all 2013 Panasonic Smart TVs and Blu-ray players, and likely on other partners in the Smart TV initiative soon.

The SmartTV initiative is a collaboration with Toshiba, LG and other manufacturers to create a standardized platform for hardware and apps so that third parties will not only have the confidence to develop their products for use in the living room without the expense of separate development for every manufacturer. Since Samsung and Sony have heavy investments in their own platforms, they have yet to join the alliance, but hopefully in the future their talents and resources will benefit the entire ecosystem, just like content providers have united behind UltraViolet.

So hide the credit card, or face the 57 pocket fishermen arriving at your door.
