For those who, for whatever reason, can’t mount an antenna or get good reception, and want to cut the cable cord, upstart rebel broadcast TV streamer Aereo is planning an expansion to 22 new markets this spring, including:
Atlanta Austin Baltimore Birmingham, AL Boston Chicago Cleveland Dallas Denver Detroit Houston Kansas City Madison, WI Miami Minneapolis Philadelphia Pittsburgh Providence, RI Raleigh—Durham, NC Salt Lake City Tampa Washington, DC
Aereo will let you stream live TV to smartphones, computers, and tablets, or DVR your shows for later viewing, with plans that stretch from $1/day to $80 a year. It remains to be seen whether the service will stand the legal challenges it will likely face for the re-transmission of copyrighted material, but there’s no arguing that for those that just want access to the basics, the price — and the 40 hours of DVR space they offer for the yearly customers — is way cheaper than cable.
